Hi the past 2 times i have rode the bike it has been cutting out at me at junctions etc.

Bike is a kawasaki zxr 400

If the bike cuts out in gear i have to go into neutral switch off and on the ignition and it starts but just dies again the next time i stop.

This has started since changing the oil, oil filter, coolant, fuel filter and airfilter.

I have tried increasing the idle slightly however its still cutting out just not as often

once above idle the engine is fine.

I understand it could be many things so if you could give me a few things to check that would be great.

Also my chain seems to have a mind of its own. I am having to adjust it evrey time i ride the bike. One minute its tight then next loose. It never stays oiled, looks dry after one ride and iv just noticed some of the links have gone stiff/stuck. Thanks Very Happy

When it's ticking over is it lumpy ? Might need to go higher on the idle, what's it idling at once warm ?

Chain probably needs replacing then, check the sprocket for excessive ware too. Also check your rear wheel when it's elevated, check there's no movement

it idles between 1200-1500rpm when warm but sometimes drops to 1000rpm and sounds a bit rough.

Had a similar problem on my rvf a few years ago, kept upping the idle which helped but eventually needed to replace the plugs and reset the carbs

Might be worth balancing the carbs or getting it done if you can't do it yourself. Also worth checking the plugs for anything out of the ordinary

Hi the plugs were changed last year and i have done very little miles since. I last balanced the carbs last year it was running fine so was going to leave it but it seems i may have to do this again.

It's worth checking of its not too much trouble , there's nothing in particular that put mine off when it happened

If its unbalanced the plugs might be fouled, just pop one out and have a look at it

My FZ was doing exactly the same thing. I had one inlet rubber that was completely knackered so that will need to be replaced. Also the carbs could probably do with a clean too.

Hi balance on the carbs is fine have checked it today.

I tried running the bike at idle until warm. Then switched the headlights on and had the indicators on (as though i was sat in traffic) as soon as i blip the throttle or the cooling fan kicks in the engine cuts out.

Sounds like a electrical fault battery alternator etc ?
