Been paid out £2900 for my bike, + a further £400 if I sell the bike to the insurance company (its a cat d). Basically I'm just wondering what to get now. I liked my MT-03, apart from the jerky power delivery & clunky gearbox, so I've been trying to find something similar.
Keep coming back to KTM's, although they're a little expensive, but I've been looking at everything from DT's to Hornet's. Any ideas?
Ideal bike: lightweight, not too big, not too fussed about power but anything from 250 - 600cc depending. Insurance might be a bit of an issue as well now I'm classed as a crasher ____________________ Yamaha MT-03 '08 (crashed)

Fully faired, cramped riding position with, probably old brittle hard to find plastics and panels if should another spill occur, and suspension that's useless as std for anyone over 8st. Every day commuter? No thank you not for me!
If the OP wants a nice punchy single, then choices are limited somewhat, but things like the Honda FMX650 are pretty cheap and would do a decent job. Be a shame to lose the looks and funkiness of the MT, but hey.
KTM's are a bit rare, and I'd expect it would be hard to find a nice Duke or 690SM etc at the price bracket involved.
I'd look at other stuff potentially like the Honda Hornet, Yam FZ6 or an ER6, BMW G650X etc. |

Yeah not into sports bikes. Considered an FMX650 before, do like them, but fairly expensive seeing as they're not meant to be that good. Also was looking at the naked FZ6, but the gearbox is meant to be crap, and that was the one thing I couldn't stand about the MT-03.
Really like the old Hornet's (05-06 models), that was gonna be my next bike after gaining another years NCD I think around 100bhp is a nice amount of power, maybe too much for my urban commute, but still...

Really really like them, on paper at least looks like an ideal bike, but insurance would be too much. Plus being third party I'd be nervous about spending 5k on one. ____________________ Yamaha MT-03 '08 (crashed)

I admire sports bikes (such as the west livery GSX-R that wheelied past me this morning ), but in terms of living with the riding position etc. I know I'd come to hate one. ____________________ Yamaha MT-03 '08 (crashed)

BMW X Moto. That one was rescued from the Cornish fish-folk even.
Also keep an eye out for X Country, and X... whatever the other one was called. Lighter and more powerful than the G650GS, my working assumption is that they only didn't sell because they didn't have that magic "GS" badge. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Haven't read through the other thread fully, but as it's only a Cat D, I'm guessing it's mainly cosmetic, apart from the forks?
First thing I would do is put your bike back on the road, it won't cost anything like £2900 to do it (probably less than a grand) and you get a running concern that you can P/X, or the bike you like back again, whichever you decide.
Either way, you're up on the deal. ____________________ Things get better with age; I'm close to being magnificent........

Old bikes now, but great build quality. Concur about fairings. However seem to remember that OP is built on the small side, in which case a CBR400 will not feel at all cramped; it was comfortable for me at 5'8". For the same reason the rear suspension may be okay, if a little tired.
But still, a 20-year old bike for commuting... ____________________ Kawasaki KMX200 with broken fixed powervalves and a stutter |

Forks are £800 new, although I saw some went for £150 on eBay, currently there's an entire front end on for £350 (minus the headlight - which I need as well).
The bike currently doesn't start, the electrics come on but I can't hear the fuel pump, battery might be flat as its been sat for over a month now?
I'd like to repair the bike but the practicalities of sourcing parts, not having anywhere to work on it, and my own limited mechanical ability might become a real headache.
Also I'm nervous about spending money on the bike and it still not being 'right', as I'm already basically a grand up, or the damage being more serious than it appears. ____________________ Yamaha MT-03 '08 (crashed)
