So, I have sold the Varadero 125 and bought an NTV650.
I call Swinton, ask for Varadero to be taken off policy and NTV added, but just fire and theft as it will be in the garage until I pass imminent test (or retakes).
Swinton tell me they can't cover me until I have passed test. Put me on to Bikesure.
Nice lady called Annabel sorts me out with cover I need and says I have 60 days to pass my test. Hurrah!
Back to Swinton to cancel policy. Am told it will cost £50.00 so to do.
The policy costs me £9.00 a month. There is 1 month left on it.

Is it me?

(I didn't cancel policy, but what is this crap and does it matter that I have an insurance policy on a bike I no longer own??).

If you have paid the complete policy then you should get a refund, should! But we know there will be some kind of reason you won't. Insist on a refund.

Do not tell them you have sold the machine, tell them you are thinking of selling it and getting another and ask what the price of the new policy will be and will there be as charge for you cancelling the previous. If you tell them you no longer have the bike you have to notify them within two weeks and cancel the policy.

Now if you go to a different company for new insurance all you need do is forget that you haven't cancelled the last policy. If it's 9 quid for the remainder of the month then it's a no brainer!

The policy doesn't cost £9 per month. The loan you took out that paid the cost of the policy in full costs £9 per month.

Truth.

Also, anticipatory congratulatories.

It's entirely dependent on the contract.

On my Hastings Direct policy, for example, there's no premium refund after 6 months. Admin fees including cancellation are £30 per change. Unlike with the 2 week cooling off period, there's no requirement for fees to be reasonable, other than the contract itself being reasonable.

You "should" cancel the policy, because if the new owner stacks the bike into well lawyered up kittens while uninsured, then your policy will (likely) pay out for their whole life care, and your insurer will be most displeased.

I have in the past "forgotten" to do so, although now I might be minded to get proof of postage for a letter sent to their address which, to the best of my recollection, contained a notification that I no longer had the vehicle. Whistle

That would be a bad move. As Rogerborg stated, if the new owner has an accident then your insurance company can be liable and the terms of the Policy will see them chasing you for reimbursement.

There was a very informative post on another forum by a solicitor on this very subject. If I come across it I will link it.

What is the chance of the buyer of your bike stacking it into someone?
and
What is the chance if the buyer does stack it into someone, they're uninsured?
and
What is the chance of you getting chased for the money by an insurance company?

We're getting into vanishingly small odds here. If you don't accept small risks, stop riding motorbikes.

Personally, I'd risk it. Just tell them you won't be renewing and leave it at that.

This whole thing about proof of license is bullshit, in six years of having a car I have never had to produce one shred of evidence to say I'm entitled to be on the road, yet for my bike I had to post off five different certificates in addition to all the forms they want.

Doesn't only become a problem if both parties try to claim on the insurance?

I had insurance for an er5. It was a ridiculously low amount for the years cover, amounted to £7.50 when cashback was taken into consideration. Swinton wanted £50 to cancel, so we let it run. Bike was insured by the guy we sold it to. Absolutely zero kittens were harmed, killed doubly claimed for. No problems.

I would let it run, especially for such a short amount of time.
As for your other bike I would sorn it for now, no insurance required.

If the other biker stacks, even if insured, it and it is his fault, your insurance is just as liable for any third party risk as his. Feel free to ignore it and probably nothing will come of it. Eh, maybe. But unless it's a hojillion dubloon quadraspazz claim, what are the chances of the new owner's insurers trying to split the indemnity with yours?

Remember, it's indemnity for liability, not "pay anything to anyone" cover.

Which covers the case of the new owner having no insurance, not the split liability situation.

I agree that if you're selling to some pikey then you should consider covering your back, but it's a £30 - £50 up front cost against a (very) small chance of hassle later.

You could always just tell your insurer that you no longer have the bike, so they can "void" the policy (as they seem so keen on doing) and wish them the very best of luck in recovering what you "owe" them.

I mention this because eBike passed my ~£7.70 cancellation net "debt" onto a collections agency some months ago. How terrified I must be that I will land up in court any day now. Very Happy

They are robbing c*nts!!

I changed my car just 2 weeks before my renewal...they told me my current insurer wouldnt cover the car but they found another Insurer who could....all well and good but this was £130 MORE than what I could get it from elsewhere so said id cancel it.....she then told me its a £50 fee to cancel....WTF!! The whole years policy was only £150 and they wanted £50 to cancel with 2 weeks left!!...and only because THEY wouldnt cover the new car.

I wouldnt insure with them again unless I knew 100% I wouldnt be changing my vehicle mid term.

I had this with bennets, 4 times I rang back before i got it cancelled free of charge.
They wanted £1200 to insure my "new" bike while MCE was a tad under £500

Read your policy documents. Ask questions when taking out the policy.

A charge for changes to your policy is pretty normal. Cancelling the policy is of course a change to the policy. Having to send the insurance certificate back is also pretty normal.

Insurance companies profit from stupid people.

Most insurers have a cancellation fee...its how they make extra money. Best let it expire and in the meantime move on to another insurer. Thumbs Up

You cant really do that as you need to cancel the one to transfer the NCB to the other.
