gear shifter abit loose....any help please?

Hi guys, I have a cbf 125 and the gear shifter is abit wobbly. Changes gear absolutly fine but just isnt fully sturdy. Is this just a case of tightening the bolt up and problem sorted?

Heers. Just at work and dont have any tools, byt making sure thats the right thing to do when I get home. Because im so new to the me hanics side of things but I want to lwarn, im scares ill just touch something and the bike will just die! Haha

I'd need to look at the bike to work it out, but more than likely. You should probably ask this question in the Workshop section rather than in General.

It looks like there is a lever for the rider, a linkage and a lever that connects onto the gear shift shaft. The rider's lever might be loose, the linkage might be worn (you can't really tighten it) or the pinch bolt that tightens the lever that is on the shaft. Make sure this pinch bolt is tight.

The lever is usually sitting on the inside part of the footpeg and the footpeg is bolted to the footpeg hanger. I'm sure you'd notice if the footpeg itself was loose so I'm guessing this is either a worn linkage, a loose pinch bolt, or the little brass ball from the linkage has come loose from the gear shift lever.

I'd check/tighten up the external bits first. If that doesn't work it could be something like the gear shifter return spring broken or worn causing the lever to not return properly.

Depends what you mean by "wobbly".

Just give everything a wiggle with your hand see what's floppy, you'll soon figure it out.

It looks like the actual foot shift lever is on a peg. Start with that, see if there's any free play. The lever on my GPz305 was loose on the peg and rattled like a bucket of wasps. I had to pack a shim (a sliver of Irn Bru can, I believe) under it. Even at that, it still had some side-to-side movement on the peg. If it's that, it's nothing to worry about, it's just an annoyance.

However, also follow the link forward to the clamp on the actual gear shifter shaft, and make sure that's secure. There will be a bolt running through it to hold it clamped on the splined shaft. Don't just heave on it if it's not loose, you'll strip something: see if there's any looseness first.

Double check all mounts and check the lock nut on each end of the shift rod.
