I filled up my moped yesterday, got 2-3 miles down the road and it cut out and wouldn't start again, just wondering if the fuel could be the problem? eg, water in fuel. Anyone had a problem before?

Could be water.
Could be that you've stirred up some rust or sludge from the bottom of your tank and sucked it into your jets.
Could be that you put diesel in it.
Could be something totally unrelated.
Could be that we might be able to guess the issue based on a "could be?" question, although I wouldn't bet on it.

Help us to help you.

Did it die suddenly, or did it lose power gradually?

What moped is it?

Do you know what fuelling system it uses: gravity feed and petcock, vacuum tap or electric pump?

Have you done anything else (at all) to your moped recently?

My post from ''The Workshop'' (Hope this is ok to repeat)
Hi all, I've had this bike for about 5 months, Its a 53 Peugeot speedfight 2 100cc. Only problem I've had is one of the jets was blocked, I don't thrash the bike at all. Sometimes going down a hill it will cut out (Hasn't done for months, have to keep revs low) Yesterday, I had just filled up with fuel after being very low, I was going down a hill (about 2-3 miles after filling up) and at the bottom it cut out (instantly, no jerking etc) so when it's happened before it starts straight away, I pulled over and it wouldn't start. Pushed the thing home, checked it out today, The engine turns over but wont start with either electric or kickstart.
Checked:
Has Fuel
Has Oil
Spark good
Has good Compression
Cleaned carb
Battery good

I've put a little bit of fuel in the barrel and It wont start. I have a spare Speedfight 2 so can use parts off it. I smelt the fuel and it doesn't smell right to me, and it's strange that I filled up and get 2-3 miles down the road and it cuts out? Could it be fuel?
Any help will be appreciated.

Cheers

I definitely put unleaded in, I have the receipt still. It is a vacuum tap, I have not done a thing, the bike is factory standard.

The jets in your carb are probably getting full with crap from your tank, this keeps happening on mine and gets resolved by stripping the carb and putting a needle through the jets. Only happens to me on full throttle though which can make overtaking scary.

Cleaned the carb + jets this morning, even if they were it should still start after putting fuel in the top of the cylinder shouldn't it? There's a good strong spark, fuel in the cylinder, yet it's not starting, Has to be the fuel? Unless it's not actually sparking inside the cylinder?

In fact it wouldn't spark if it were ignition issues or a kill switch left on would it?

When you say you put fuel in the chamber, was it fresh or from the tank?

Just from the tank, I don't have any fresh. Guess that will be the next step.

Also what colour was the spark plug when you took it out? Was it wet?

When you tested the spark, what colour was it? Blue or yellow? I'd quickly grab the one off your other bike just to rule it out.

The spark is blue, I've tried 3 spark plugs, 2 used one new one. The new one I just tried came out wet. The one I had in initially was a browny colour. Thanks

Spray some starter fluid in the air intake. If it tries to start when you turn it over then you know it definitely something to do with the fuel.

Yes I have faced this problem last week when i was going to London. I checked all parts and filled up the fuel tank. When I started my journey my motorcycle was riding smoothly. After covering 5-6miles the motorbike engine shut down and did not start again. I do not know what was the problem. Crying or Very sad

Those things have got a French immobiliser on them. It's a real biatch. Have you got a red (coded) key? If not pray it ain't that. The other putain de merde on those is the right hand (starter button) switchgear. Try those. Hope its the second one or you'll need a 'Euro' screwdriver to take off all its clothes & perform immobiliser bypass surgery. The French 'Euro' plastique is really brittle on some bits & it cracks easy. Some bits have le soft 'Euro' plastique so the threads(?) go. Don't take the plastique off unless its absolutely ness or they will buzz 'n' rattle, forever, like anything Peugeot.

It won't spark if the immobiliser kicks in.

It won't turn over either. I've never come across a bike with an immobilizer that would turn over when immobilized.

hi,
without sounding like a complete c*nt, please dont advise others to clean out carb jets with a needle.
The needles likely to be mad Laughing e of a material harder than the soft brass or alloy used for carb internals. Tut Tut
If you HAVE TO stick something through a jet,use a nylon bristle or similar.
I have cleaned out umpteen carbs without having to poke things through jets.
use carb cleaner, solvent or whatever you have lying around. Even seen coke (no,not that kind) used.
once cleaned, fit an in-line fuel filter
I find my air duster thing with compressor ideal for this; any reputable place will do it ultrasonically.

cheers,
GAZ
