hi guys,

hope all is good.

I am looking to buy a camera for my helmet which has a hd quality but the price is quite high ( £150-200)

Should i buy helmet camera or tank camera if speed is around 120-30 miles etc .

any specific model that you have in mind or you don own ?

something that filters the wind noise to an extent

Thanks

I have a Drift Ghost HD, cost me a bit more than your budget, but similar models are available cheaper. I use an external mic, routed out of the wind and it can be mounted on my helmet or on the tank via a suction cup if I want.

The Drift range is best by far for your intended use IMO.
Drift HD (before Ghost) is in your price range and shares mounts and more should you change later.
But the Ghost is better, and the new Ghost S better still (at a price) but does perform well in low light.

Drift cameras can be screwed on a standard tripod style mount so you have a range of options like clamps and suction mounts at reasonable cost.

I have to give credit to Rogerborg for being the first BCFer (as far as I know) to discover this.

SJ1000 action camera, £50-60

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Waterproof-Portable-Sports-Camera-Meters/dp/B00ENF3C5S

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QppW_0_DuiE

You will also find it on ebay. I'm going to be getting one myself once summer is nearer. Does everything the expensive ones do and is just as versatile.

SJ4000 might be better - looks like a go pro and compatible with go pro mounts too.

Techmoan review

Anyone looking for a budget waterproof action camera with access to a wide variety of mounting options should put the SJ4000 at the top of their shortlist....and I can't think of what would go in second place.

Yup, I'm happy with my SJ1000. I went bonkers and got a 2nd battery and a standalone charger for the sum total of £11 delivered as well so that I always have a fresh one to drop in.

The SJ4000 GoPro Hero copy-camera might be worth a look if you want to spend a bit more.

Reliability and warranty is the concern with no-brand cameras, it depends how cheap and risk tolerant you are.

I've just bought a Drift HD for 99 quid. If you can wait a couple of days for me to get my hands on it and set it up [probably in the car for the next couple of weeks] i'll try give a review of it. Mounting-wise for helmet purposes it seems a good bet Thumbs Up

looks like the one I should be buying , what about mounts ? I want it so it can record and show the road plus speed.

it has a 140 degree angle which is really good.

thanks for sharing

Road plus speed on a video = court evidence!! (If you ride faster than the law allows that is....... Which you shouldn't) Very Happy

The Drift HD Ghost has a video loop setting which allocates a bit of the memory card and continuously records, then when you come across something interesting/scary/painful you hit a button on the wristwatch remote and it saves the last 30 seconds of footage + the next 30 seconds in one handy clip.

I think that timeframe can be adjusted too.

Turns out the HD comes with a remote as well so I assume it can do the same but for much less Smile

You need the Ghost onwards for the time travel thing.
It records a continuous loop internally, and if something happens it saves a period before and after the event to the card - but you have to manually trigger it.
It doesn't seem particularly good for accidents as there's a fair chance that you won't remember or be able to start it.
Minor incidents or a 'special' bit of road it's OK.

I stand corrected. I assumed Drift would add that as a simple software update, all the hardware is there surely?

Not long ago they added a drive recorder function to the Ghost just for the hell of it, which switches on and starts loop recording automatically when power is supplied by the ignition. Might be a bit more suitable as a crash cam should the worst happen Silence

I got my Drift HD today, haven't actually mounted it yet but this is the mount/adhesive pad that it comes with for helmet mounting. Its very slightly curved so will go on most areas of the helmet. Then the camera can be unscrewed from that mount if you wish to move it and use it elsewhere.
You can see it mounted on someone elses helmet in the third post here. https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=285053&highlight=https://i62.tinypic.com/dzgks1.jpg

so I guess I could use the same for the tank

Few people i've asked on here have said they seem fairly sturdy with just the adhesive even at triple figure speeds, although wind resistence issues a few people have found with helmet mounted ones I believe, others not at all though.

Something similar on a tripod on the tank may be best bet if you want to bike mount it - depending on your bike and its screen etc possibly blocking the view of course. Couple of people on here have mounted them on front mudguards/between forks too IIRC.

The sticky mounts seem stronger than you'd think but if you bumped it on something a time or two there must be a risk of it dropping off.
It will be very important to get the surface clean and dry before attaching, and give it at least overnight somewhere warm to 'cure'.
It's possible to fit a DIY lanyard round the mount and loop it onto helmet strap or something.

Moar mounts!

This accessory pack is brilliant. Thumbs Up Very Happy The ones usually sold by Drift come in packs of five but you either get 5x flat or 5x curved, which for me was too many of the same thing. This seller seems to have a load of mounts and does handy 3 + 3 of each Smile

I've got one on my bike helmet, one on my work helmet, a couple of flat ones on the bike etc They're also all within lanyard-ing distance of something solid to loop around just in case.
