Hi guys, new to the forum

I've recently purchased a cheap bike for getting about, a Hartford Legion.

It does have a couple of issues which I could do with some help fixing. I am not the most technically minded soul, in fact you could say I am a bit ham fisted, however funds are tight so need to give it a go.

1. leaking oil from the magneto cover - I'm guessing this is from the gasket. I was given a replacement gasket with the bike (Suzuki GN gasket) and it didn't fit. Not even close. Since there is not many (any?) Hartford dealers, which gasket should I get? I've been told they are CG engines, so would a CG gasket be correct?

2. I'm leaking petrol somewhere. it seems to be coming from the carb. I suspect that it is something simple like pipework plumbing. I have a pipe that comes from the bottom of the carb that goes nowhere and an inlet at the top that has nothing connected. Again, is it a CG based engine and Carb and would it be worth getting hold of the CG manual from the library? Or can anyone post a diagram of how the carb should be plumbed in.
(It can't be far out because it does start and run, but over the course of a few days, all the petrol in the tank drains out)

3. When I have had it running, the neutral light stays on permanently, regardless of what gear it is in. Any ideas? Again would a CG manual help? (Library doesn't list stocking the chinese manual)

Sorry that my first post seems to be asking for help.

Also I see from browsing the forums that 1 or 2 of you have had these bikes before. what are they like in general? In the past I've had a Sym Wolf and a couple of Yamaha SR's (which I found to be a bit gutless)

Thanks for now

Yup, that looks like another of the GN/SR/CM copybikes.

The engine does appear to be a 156FMI or 157FMI CG copy engine. They're all much the same.

This CG125 site is a decent resource, or a Haynes for the CG should suffice for the engine.

The pipe at the bottom of the carb is a drain hose. There will be a screw above it to drain the fuel out of the float bowl.

Petrol leaks can be a sod to find because it evaporates quickly. I'd go with cleaning everything up and then dousing the area in talc to try and localise it.

First though I'd give the float bowl a good smack to see if it's just a sticky float.

Neutral light, I'd remove the bulb. Whistle

Thanks for the reply, I have gotten the cg Haynes from the library.
Based on what you have said about the drain pipe, that appears to be where the leak is coming from on first inspection. Because I thought it should be connected elsewhere I tucked it up and popped an old screw in the end. The thing is it seems to drain the whole tank over a period of several days regardless of the position of the fuel tap.

Does this mean I may have a problem there as well?

Like I say, I'm reluctant to start pulling things apart for fear of making things worse (more expensive)

Could it even be as simple as the drain screw come loose?

I've also seen diagrams on the net where there is a return pipe from the bottom of the carb back to the top. Is this right or am I getting confused.

A quick glance through the Haynes shows how to remove and refit the carb but no diagram on how it should be plumbed up. ie, what pipes go where.

Thanks

I think I may have fixed the fuel leak. There was a good half turn extra on the drain screw, so I think it was just dripping from that. I've also taken the advice and gave the gloat bowl a good tap incase the floats were sticking.

It seems to be starting easier now, so a combination of the 2 seems to have done it.

Just gonna keep an eye on it (and get a cg magneto cover gasket for the oil leak)

Ah, a Legion. that was my first bike, loved it. Almost as good a quality build as an original CG Thumbs Up

Shocked Yes that would have been unfortunate. Glad you found that. Very Happy
