Can anybody give me any advice on this?

I own a zx9R C1 and 4th and 5th gear have started to go awol, I figured it would be easier and cheaper to just get another complete engine but what I would like to know is can I put a newer model engine in, as this would avoid the known gearbox trait with the C1 and give me a better transmission.

Will everything fit or will I have to stick to the same model? Shocked

You would need to check the Part Numbers for the frame (as thats what holds the engine) between the two models and see if they are the same. Most manufacturers have a parts 'bin' that they mix and match from when designing a new bike ( 79-83 CB750/900 all had the same parts apart from carbs, barrels, cam shafts and cranks), so you may be lucky.

Later engines fit, or F1/2 gearboxes will.

I have a dodgy fourth gear, it's not too bad, but I've just picked up a 03-06 Z1000 gearbox to fit to my existing engine (It's a good engine - and I get to keep the same numbers) over the winter.

So, does that mean I could fit an F2 engine into the C1 frame ? I must be asleep or something or have you put a Z1000 tranny into a zx9r engine???

Yes F2 engine will fit.

And I am indeed about to put a z1000 transmission into my C1 ZX9R as per the guide above.

It just turned up this morning infact!

130 squids delivered plus the time to fit, vs 400+ for a replacement engine of unknown condition.

+the best part of £100 in gaskets, Laughing I thought second gear was starting to go on My TDM looked up how much a repair would cost and it would be fortunes as I would what to replace all the seals/bearings and piston rings. Laughing

I reckon I'll get away with re-using the old gaskets, I'll see how it comes apart first.

Shouldn't be too much of a bad job.

Regardless, I know the rest of the 12,000 mile engine is good - No funny noises, doesn't burn any oil, etc - So I'd rather have peace of mind than an unknown second hand engine from ebay.

Just wondering because the local kwaka dealer said the engine mountings were different?

I wasn't aware of that.

I know the gearboxes fit - I didn't think the engines were different apart from that.

Probably best asking on the 9r forum for someone who's actually done it - Or paying someone to swap over the 'box.

I've just put a C engine into a F frame with no problems it went straight in, it just meant the extra engine mounts on the F frame went unused.
