Hi All,

My r6 is making a ticking noise which I think wasn't there before. I can hear it at 2-3k rpm and after that the engine gets load and can't hear it .

it makes a clicking sound when the clutched level is not pulled in which is eliminated when pulled in and people said that is normal ( on this forum ).

now this new ticking or maybe it is just me been paranoid, seems like the tappets starving for oil. it is not very load but you can occasionally hear it when doing 2-5 kish while cursing.

the oil should have done less than 1.5k and it was changed before I bought it . I have no idea what the guy has put in but he wasn't a cowboy so should have put the appropriate oil in .

should I just change the oil and filter anyway as it could be the quality of the oil ?

do you guys change filter with every oil change ?

You 'SHOULD' check the oil level first of all

Oil level doesn't matter on an r6. As long as the light isn't on then you're good to go.

As always, cct

hmm ,

I will read the manual when get home . I think they normally have a screw to tighten it up.

If it is loose what are the implications and how do I adjust it so it is not too tight that it will break and cause a disaster assuming the pistons will hit valves

Self adjusting.

If it is noisy then it is dirty or knackered, so clean or replace accordingly.

if it breaks I guess as with most cars you will end up with a hole in the piston, is that right ?

on my old sym bike, it had a screw to tighten it up.

when checking the chain, should I just check to ensure it is not dirty and haven't got any bad rollers as with sprocket chain ?

when replacing I guess I need a looking tool for the camshaft and crankshaft to ensure they won't spin, is that correct ?

Could be tappet tick, in which case ^^^this^^^.

Or it could be a header pipe gasket, which sounds a lot like a tappet tick. I'm told. Embarassed

Sorry, ^^^this^^^ meant all that stuff above about valves and stuff.

To track it down, have a listen. It'll be easier with the fairing off as you can get at the engine better.

I took the CCT out and as per haynes manual did test it .

here is a video of it .

me with finger pressure

https://tinypic.com/player.php?v=2qimyw4%3E&s=8#.U6wJAfldV8E

using screw driver

https://tinypic.com/player.php?v=rvlpxk%3E&s=8#.U6wJRfldV8E
basically haynes says to test it ,

wind it in all the way , then put your finger on it and release the pressure and it should pop out slowly .

It does pop up but in bits and jerkey motion rather than slow and smooth . I think it is because I am not keeping a constant pressure and suddenly take a lot of pressure of it so it jumps out.

if I stick the screw driver in it, wind it and unwind the screw driver it works well.

I did put some wd40 in it to clean and then put oil in it .
I thought that will not damage it as it is only a spring and pipe and that is all so no damage should be caused.

I don't want to spend £110 on cam tensioner if that is not faulty .

I can hear the sound from the exhaust area and think maybe it could be exhaust gaskets so want to change them all.
it sound like, I can hear the combustion from inside the engine translated to a ticking noise .

It is hard to explain but can't explain it any better.

Also my r6 can't idle spot on so think exhaust gas is leaking or the throttle bodies need to be synched . it idles at around 1.3 and moves by 100 side to side .

Am I correct thinking a leaky exhaust valve or throttle body sync can cause this ?

Do you ignore posts on purpose?

Yamaha engines are known for their ticking noises. Especially the R6 and R1.

Just do a google search for "Yamaha Tick", almost all of them do it.

I have read them but the noise seems like an issue. I think it wasn't there before and it is now.

Just trying to ensure nothing gets fu*ked up

Some yamahas do it from new, others after 300 miles, others after 6k, some at 25k.

They all do it at some point, a guy on the R6 owners forum stripped an engine that was ticking and found no sign of damage or excessive wear.
