Was cleaning the centrifugal filter yesterday. The bike is 29 years old and I don't think that it has ever been cleaned in it's lifetime, judging by the amount of crud in it!

Anyway, without dismantling:

The clutch externally, the teeth on the crankshaft and primary gear on the clutch outer basket all look pristine.

However, I noticed that the clutch outer basket wobbles about! Although I've only ridden the bike in my small garden, there were no problems with the clutch operation.

Searched the net, found a lot of posts regarding this issue but no definitive answer. Some say normal, others saying replace the clutch basket.

So a bit confused, your thoughts on this would be much appreciated.

Thanks

There's a bearing in the back of the basket. Then the clutch is' in' it lets the basket spin on the gearbox input shaft. When clutch is out, baskets locked to the shaft so it doesn't turn.
Riding the clutch wears that bearing.
29 years of Learner abuse its probably a little sloppy.
It may be user serviceable if you overhaul the clutch; new plates & springs are only £20-£25 ISTR. No idea how much a basket bearing might be. Maybe a fiver?

Thanks Teflon-Mike.

Looking at the parts list, it seems that the bearing in the Clutch Basket Outer is not listed, so it's not a serviceable part (unless someone knows a way).

As the clutch operation seems OK, I think I will leave as-is at the moment and see how it goes when I get the bike on the road (if ever!). But I'm not happy with the amount of movement there.

For info some pics:

Cheers
