I thought I'd get in early for this year’s waterproofs thread..

I had to properly test my Triumph textiles riding from Bristol to Dorset. It rained the whole way there, about 80 miles. I was soaked through. After about 20 miles I had wet patches on my t-shirt, but when I got there it was wet all over.

My boots seemed to hold up well

I think this year I'm going to try a waterproof oversuit.

This one looks good, has anyone got one? - https://www.getgeared.co.uk/alpinestars_rainwear_quick_seal_out_2-piece_set_black

The price seems steep, I've seen some much much cheaper. I would really like one that someone on here has used and can recommend.

Thanks
FJ

Bought a Reissa one-piece, never used it yet.

I wear two piece Regatta gear, and I put the waterproof jacket under my cordura / leather outerwear. Eliminates flapping, and the outer takes the force out of the wet blowjob to give the waterproof layer a better chance of stopping it.

Come Winter in about two weeks, I'll be putting the Tucano Gaucho invalid blanket back on the GS to deal with the bottom half. Looks tarded, works very well.

I did 200 miles to Wales earlier this year and my stuff held out for about 60miles and by the end very wet.

My thinking is I want something to wear over my gear thats 100% waterproof. I want a 1pc as reckon over distance is the better choice.

I use cheap builders waterproof over-trousers & jacket. About twenty quid a set. Ok the rain does work it's way in eventually, but I suspect that's the case whatever you wear.

I tested my Hein Gerike one piece suit going from Amsterdam to Nurburg, for a cheapish suit it held up really well. Get a suit with leg holes wide enough to fit your boots down as when it's pissing down you won't want to take your boots off to put it on. Mine also allows adjustment round the waist and upper arms so that I'm not flapping away like a 20's showgirl.

Get one that has a double fastening down the front (mine had a zip then Velcro over it) and some extra waterproofing down the crotch as that's where a lot of water gets funnelled. Look for one that you can fit snugly round your neck so you don't rub yourself raw with Velcro. Above all it has to be simple to put on, imagine you get stuck in a sudden downpour and need to put it on in 30 seconds or less - can you?

Got one of these myself...

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/380856953993

Haven't used it yet but it seems like it should do a great job. Did try it on over my bike kit when I got it, and easy to put on whilst still wearing boots and gloves, and comfortable when turning your head, no rubbing on your neck.

The zip has an expanding seam behind it to stop any water that does get past from soaking your layers beneath... then a velcro flap that goes over the top, so the zip shouldn't even get wet in the first place.

Folds into its own small pack with a strap so you can fit it to your waist when not wearing it, or maybe fix it to the seat like a tail pack.

Same for me - use one of these and it keeps you absolutely dry, just of course is a little bit more hassle getting in out out of it than split overalls/textiles, but for a long trip i'd rather be sure about staying dry personally. External pocket on the knee too for anything like cards you need to access regularly to avoid you having to open the suit/luggage in the rain.

Also use these Black textiles off Ghostbikes sometimes. Not bad at all for 99 quid, armours not the best though to be honest. Have used them for over 5 hours in heavy rain so far without any leaking - they have a thick plaster liner which looks like it wouldn't let anything through. Does make them very hot if the weathers warm though.

Did you fix the drowned phone in the end Shifty?

I use Triumph Gear and really rate it,

My jacket cost £55 from the BMF show 7 years ago, I have used it on every cold/wet day 5 days a week since then and it is still really good and 100%* water proof. The Trousers are not as old but still good.

I have Daytona Boots which are also excellent. However they fucking should be for the money. Laughing

*The only problem is if you get on and forget to flatten the front. It folds up and creates a little trough for water to pool in which goes through and gives you a wet belly button. If you simply flatten it when you sit down you are fine.

Best waterproof trousers I have are a proper fisher and bib and brace over my draggin jeans, and a cheap builders waterproof jacket under my textiles. Both have kept me completely dry all day on site, then quick change of wellies to my boots and ready for a nice ride home. No wind gets through the trousers or anything, bit hard work getting on and off the bike but not too bad.

Me too, quite a bulky item even when packed down to the bag. About the size of a six pack of cokes.
Not tried mine in anger yet, but it's handy having it strapped to the rear seat. Seems a decent and sturdy bit of kit.

Certainly a lot to think about! Thanks everyone.

I can't quite decide if I want something easy to put on at the road side or something a bit more fitted to put on before I go out. Or maybe both. Whatever I do, I'll do a write up.

Thanks again.

I bought a two piece Spada waterproof over suit last year. I've only used it a few times but, it's kept me bone dry. Haven't done any 100 mile motorway trips to really test it though.....yet.

I should add a second long-term update on the Elka Working Xtreme Thermal Coverall one-piece oversuit I got a few months back.

https://www.engineeringagencies.co.uk/elka-working-xtreme-thermal-coverall-088002

I brought this along on the tour I just came back from - Swiss Alps, Austrian Alps, Slovenian Alps, and Croatian coast, then a rush back on motorways, including through a total of 5 thunderstorms yesterday.

I wore it over a leather two-piece. With nothing more than a base layer underneath the leather and the Elka suit on top, it was warm enough when it got down to 12 degrees, and minimal flapping, even at 140mph on the autobahn. Kept me dry through all 5 thunderstorms - the kind that slows the traffic to 50kph.

Only gotchas are that you have to make sure any folds that occur on the front are folded down rather than up (so they don't act as buckets for rain) and that the zip flap is flat, not buckled up anywhere. Oh, and the elasticated cuffs make getting gloves off and on again for paying for petrol a bit of a pain. But apart from that, very impressed. A bit bulky, but is quite manageable in a top-box when put in a compression sack.
