Duff battery - need some confirmation

Left my bike standing for a few days last week. When I came to start it, it didn't have enough juice to go. Push started fine, although I couldn't use the lights. If I did, there wasn't enough current going to the coils so it spluttered to death.

Fast forward to today, I charged the battery fully over 3 days. Whacked it back into the bike thinking it would be fine. Got as far as Thetford and it choked out on the new bypass. As usual, I was able to jump start it and get the 50 miles home.

Am I correct in thinking the stator is fine? Would the reg/rec be fried but allow me to use the bike with a dead battery? The battery itself is well over a year old, so could just be fucked.

Aww, I thought my years of experience working in a Chippy as a teen were about to pay off.

In regards to the battery, get a multimeter on it and see if your reg rec is working.

I got in a cheeky edit before your post. Razz .

Have my multimeter handy right now. I suppose a duff reg/rec would still allow me to use the bike with no charge in the battery, supplying enough to run the ignition?

Battery is probably dead but i would get a multimeter and check stator and rec reg too

Reg/rec deals with charging the battery.

If your battery has charge the bike will work until it runs out.

The reg/rec could be undercharging or your alternator could be dead.

If reg rec fails totally then no once battery is dead again bike wont sustain itself. At present it sounds as though its sustaining the bike but not recharging battery

I read it as the bike cut out whilst running. I would say the battery aint charging.

This does not make sense.
Unless you stopped and turned the engine off. Then tried to stat it again.

I charged the battery, put it back in the bike and it fired up immediately, no issues at all. After 40 miles, the battery drained as it mustn't have been getting any charge (checking the reg/rec as we speak).

I was able to bump start it after it cut out, then continue using the bike. It would cut out if I stopped, but absolutely fine when moving, hence my thinking the stator is fine. I was confused as I thought the reg/rec must have been fine if I was able to use the bike with a dead battery. Looks like I'll be checking everything.

I had been using the bike daily with no problems for months before parking it up then finding a dead battery. Bit confused, how would the stator/reg rec fuck up when not in use?

If the reg/rec and stator are working as normal but the batter wont accept charge that will give you the symptoms your are experiencing.

Easy enough to check, just follow that pdf.

Think about it. You are riding and the bike cuts out due to a duff battery. How is bump starting it going to get it a further 50 miles ? As all you have done is restarted the engine.

Pretty sure the reg/rec is fubar. Reading above 850 on the diode test.

If the batter wasn't accepting charge but the rest of the charging system was working OK, then it would run once you get the engine spinning.

Would also want to cut out if you got the revs a bit low, batter is still trying to eat all the powar, lights on, ignition, etc. All whilst the alternator is working in its least efficient range.

Once you know the charge rate you can take it from there,if its a tad low then you want to test the output from the alternator.

Culprit ended up being a dodgy crimp on the connector block to the R/R. Tested everything else with positive results so was scratching my head for a little bit. Sorted it for now but will be recrimping it properly next week.
