Hi

Rebuilding the GF's CG 125 and I've just reassembled the new bottom end.

Issue I'm worried about is the kickstart gear appears to be still moving as I turn the motor over by hand, is the kickstart gear supposed to turn over with the engine? Note the kickstart itself is not engaged just the drive gear.

I refitted the shims on the kickstart shaft as they came out originally, wondering if they were incorrect, little shim was on the far left of the shaft closest to the gear shift side of the motor and the larger shim on the far right nearest the rear brake side (Haynes isn't particularly clear either).

Thanks
Mox

I'm gonna go with yes. If the engines running and you lower the kick stand a bit it sounds like a ratchet spinning around, the actual kick start lever will stay still as such

Thanks Karma it sounds exactly like a ratchet at present, since I haven't fitted the kickstart lever it may just be that it isn't at the rest position so the ratchet teeth are still engaged slightly.

Your CG is ancient, looking at your signature, awesome.
Restoring it?

Pics Thumbs Up

Not quite as a far as full resto but clean up & get running (running without a death rattle that is Razz). Previous bottom end was missing a bearing from the gear shaft that slots the clutch basket on so sourced one from a breakers & cannibalised the bits I needed hence stripping the bottom end.

Pic from when it was first acquired

Doesn't really need much restoring though if you ask me, got it for a fraction of what some dreamers are asking for total wrecks too.

Nice chrome mudguards, stylin

Café racer style, classic
A dose of ACF50 and a bit of TLC and it'll be AOK

The work horse itself Thumbs Up
I've got most of a CG in my front room as well as the one I ride to work Razz

Wow, CGs really had tiny front drums back then, my brakes are terrible, how does that thing even stop? Shocked

Simple, by pulling the lever. Laughing

As I see it, roads were clearer, cars didn't slam on the brakes at junctions, and attitudes were calmer.

Also, it made ordering drum shoes easy, as I believe they are the same size front and rear.

My CG, after kicking if I hold the lever down, it makes a light ratchet sound. A noticable clicking, but nothing to be worried about.

Moxey, if you actually like your girlfriend, and you want her to avoid death by truck, you are going to have to change the front brake on that thing. I ride an 80 something CG , with a brake from a 70 something CG. It is piss poor.

Don't kill your missus too look cool on a forum.

@Alpha I actually quite like the look of it, sort of reminds me of a flat track bike rather than the bog standard commuter style that developed in the 80's, gonna be a keeper I think Thumbs Up , still regret selling my RXS 100!

@faster Indeed, so long as the rider allows the kick-start to return to the rest position & ensures it disconnects, have read a few tales of them binding slightly and if left long enough welding themselves together permanently connecting the drive train to the kick-start Shocked

& why on earth would I want to kill her off Shifty besides been able to redirect house & wedding funds to a Street Triple Razz seriously though for the cost of a new front end with disc brakes, just going to sort the drums out as best as I can, managed to get my old RXS brakes to be acceptable with new shoes & cable so I would trust them provided she rides accordingly.

Pain in the arse when you bend a kick start, my buddies left him booting the exhaust till that was loose too Laughing

Mine seems to have weird wrong sized sprockets, have beat a XR125 on the road and seem to pull off faster than other 125s so no idea what's going on with the ratio's there Shocked

Unless they're just not trying Razz

Aye wish they had an electric start so all the eggs weren't in one basket for turning it over & primarily for the other half, if she stalls it in traffic I can see potential issues with kickstart only Laughing have to teach her the art of push starting as a back up.

Got the kick-start sorted without splitting the cases again, managed to grip the kick-start shaft and pull it a bit further through no more ratchet noise and all fully functional Very Happy

Also some shiny bits arrived (£35 for barrel, piston & rings, good £25 cheaper than a rebore from most places), gonna get the engine sorted & running tonight then weld the side stand mounts back on tomorrow (can't believe none of you eagle eyes spotted its not present in the photo!)

a 1997 engine in a 2001 frame, so no electric start either, but the button and relays their Razz the later models have it, runs pretty nice but the exhaust is constantly rattling around
