Hey

So I've got a Yamaha RSX100, and the bikes in a bit of a state but I'm hopefully getting it all sorted out over the next few days, now I've got the funds to do it.

Essentially the electrics are terrible. They work, but not fully. If I pull the brake for example, all the other lights will dim, especially in neutral but also while riding. The horn just won't work as the compressor doesn't have enough power to function, however if you hold your finger on the actual horn itself it'll make a little noise, so the thing itself is working. Also the headlamp is the most ineffective thing I've ever seen. I was once on a ride with a mate & it got dark faster than anticipated, I was in front of him on the road & I was actually using his headlamp to see where I was going.

I've changed the battery hoping that would help but it made no difference. Anyway I've got an ohmmeter, a haynes manual with electrical diagrams & a perfectly good brain, if you could give me a point in the right direction with this that'd be great

Cheers!

I'd start by opening/checking/cleaning all electrical connections and grounding and squish some switch cleaner in switches and connectors
Thats pukka Electrolube/Servisol/Ambersil type stuff, not WDbloody40 !

Then use info from the manual to check the charging circuit.
This usually involves resistance and voltage tests
Check lamp holders for crud as well

Or you could save yourself a few pennies and do it the traditional way using Vaseline.

The fault itself sounds like something's going to earth when it shouldn't, which as WD Forte pointed out means starting at one end of the problem areas and working your way back cleaning the terminals until it works - but it would make sense to do every terminal whilst you're at it then you may prevent other issues cropping up if the wiring is as shabby as you say
