My little MSX and its bigger brother, then NC750x are currently locked together via an Almax 3 chain which goes through the back wheels of both, and a ground anchor that sits between the two.

I've just renewed the insurance on the MSX, and it's now fully comp, however, despite declaring no security, the small print of the insurance requires that it needs to be secured by a lock which is 'sold secure' standard. I've checked the almax website, and none of their chains are certified 'sold secure'.

I do have an oxford 10mm chain, that doesn't look like it would stop anyone for very long, and I can't be bothered using 2 locks on the bike, that sounds a massive PITA.

Should I

A) go with the crappy lock, and rely on the insurance
B) stick with the almax and ground anchor, but invalidate insurance
C) something else

Almax appear to be branded one of the best chains you can get. I'd stick with it - If anything happens to your bikes, you can always say they snapped the chain and took it with 'em (your 'sold secure' one) - I'm surprised Almax don't have that badge though?

I'd ask your insurance company over the phone why the fuck the small print differs from the quote they presented you with based on the info you provided.

Secure it with the Almax.

In the event that it gets stolen, snap the Oxford in half with your bare hands, scatter the shards around and say "Yeah, was totes Sold Secured."

This small print, does it only apply at your home address, or when out and about as well?

Out and about as well

exact wording is

Quote:
A Sold Secure Lock must be fitted for theft cover to apply

For an affordable disc lock there's the datatool devil 1000. Available for ballpark £20 or less from the likes of ebay or amazon.

I got one as a spare lock. Fits under the seat.

That's Thatcham approved though, not sold secure. I think they are competing approval organisations so might be worth getting something in writing from insurance that it would be ok.

Your insurance would imply you must do something like take a photo of the lock as proof every time you park the bike.

Your chain isn't a lock, that it a padlock, you could use a piece of string and secure it with your sold secure padlock.

What padlock do you have.

The oxford chain has a disklock, but this doesn't fit though the disk of the MSX, which has no large holes.

The Almax chain uses a Squire stronghold 65mm padlock

On a strict reading of that condition, you should send them "proof" that it's locked up every time you leave it. Wink

Almax chains usually come with Squire locks...

https://www.almax-security-chains.co.uk/Anchors-and-Locks/Squire-SS65CS-Flagship-Stronghold-Lock/p-71-132/

...which are Sold Secure.

The squire lock and chain is, the padlock on it's own does not have the Sold secure rating

Seemingly I'm wrong on this front, the SS65CS padlock is Sold secure gold rated

Please email them a picture every time you lock your bike up. A separate email each time. See how long they put up with it.

It's not a dilemma with 3 options, dilemmas only have 2.

Can you not use both, and just lock the bike to the ground anchor with your Almax chain, and lock the wheels together with the Oxford one?

First of all, this is a pretty significant exclusion and term being added to your policy.

Was this brought up during your call or raised as a supplementary term?

If not I'd think this falls foul of being an unfair term or condition.

Ring them up and ask, as I'd think you'd have grounds for a full refund then you can take your business elsewhere.

I typed my details into Compare the Market, and this insurer was the cheapest. I selected no security on the compare the market site.

It wasn't cheaper by a significant margin however, so I may cancel

If you take the wording literally couldn't you just attatch the lock to the grab rail/glue it to the side/weld it to the frame....... take a photo of your sold secure lock then "fitted".

Go back to them, tell them that you bought a policy based on no security, not a sold secure chain, and that you look forward to receiving a corrected policy in due course before you need to invoke their complaints procedure.

If they refuse, the magic words are, in the politest possible tone, "OK, no problem. Is this as far as your internal complaints process goes? I want to be sure I've exhausted that before I take it to the ombudsman."

You could cable tie the end links of the Oxford to the Almax and use both at once without having to faff with separate chains?
