Hi all,

A friend of mine went to America a fer months ago, working for some camp, and before she went SORN'd her car and unisured it. She never surrendered the tax disc though.

How would she go about taking the SORN off? Or am I right in thinking it was never actually valid due to the fact she didn't surrender the tax disc?

If you do a search you'll find Rogerborg's rants helpful advice on this.

Basically if I remember this right tax disc (and any MOT) still valid insure and drive (if no MOT drive to get MOT, get insured first).

The DVLA allow you to SORN and effectively keep the tax disc (for now). Whether they should is another topic (or several).
Come October they'll have the power to rescind the tax and give out refunds of unused duty when you SORN.

Okay, so the DVLA vehicle enquiry page shows it as SORN, but as long as car is still taxed (never surrendered disc), MOT'd (it's a 1 year old car) and insured, she's fine to drive it tonight?

As Rogerborg would probably say the tax disc on the window is the physical evidence that tax is in place for the vehicle.

There is this thread that might be worth a look. In this letter DVLA state SORN only valid if no tax disc. You have tax disc though.

Laugh or you'd cry.

She's committing no offence that I'm aware of.

Why not call Swansea and ask them to flip that bit in their database anyway? If they get shirty, take the line that the vehicle license was never surrendered (do they want a picture of it?), so why did they SORN it, eh? Eh? You answer me that.

Careful now. If they never shoulda SORNed it then it was unSORNED and (possibly) therefore uninsured whilst being taxed.

In terms of actual offences being committed, I'm with Rogerborg... if you display a valid tax disc you can not be done for failing to display, and since you have it you can't be done for not having a valid tax disc. You MAY find yourself being tugged by plod because "compu'er sez no"; please video the ensuing discussion, especially their faces as you point at the tax disc.

I'm quite sure that they would be petty and spiteful enough to prosecute, but OP's chum (Y no pics?) presumably has a piece of paper saying that it was SORNed, and now hopefully a screenshot or page-capture of The Computer confirming that. Should be a laugh.

Is my point, don't take those worthless parasites as seriously as they take themselves.

Cheers guys. She rang the DVLA and asked them to remove the sorn marker and the helpful lady on the other side of the phone even retaxed it as it costs nowt to tax apparenty Shocked (turns out the tax expired at the end of last month)

I did check that she'd rang the right number but yeah, all done!

just to add to this - if you find yourself in this position, just ring them as GeorgeB's friend did, and then you're all good, did it myself twice now Thumbs Up

obviously that is provided that the disc is still in date Laughing

All of this changes in 20 days though, when The Computer's version becomes law. Sad

Old Thread Alert!

The last post was made 11 years, 149 days ago. Instead of replying here, would creating a new thread be more useful?
