Guys, a group of us just returned from a long weekend in France and unfortunately one of us got stopped for speeding. Now we have all heard about these gendarmes and the on-the-spot fines they can enforce and how expensive it can be if caught. i thought a lot of this was myth and scaremongering, however i can testify now it is true.

We (5 of us) were all cruising along the A26 10 miles from Calais when we went past a patrol hidden away behind bushes on the right. If anyone knows this road, it is completely straight, smooth surface and the temptation to open up is just too good to be true.

And sure enough the biker at the back of our bunch got pulled over by some biker cops. He was given an instant 2 month ban and a 750 euro fine. He was escorted to a handily placed cash point machine and had to hand over full payment in cash. Ban only applies in France. Be warned!!

Once banned how the poor guy got his bike back to the UK?

I always ride/drive reasonably slow in France. I've heard the stories too.

There's your problem. I thought everyone knew not to speed near the ports? Constant revenue stream every 40 minutes!

They sell your passport to the illegals at Calais trying to enter the UK, they crush your bike and they chop you up and sell you as horsemeat to Lidl who in turn sell you as beef lasagne.

He stayed with bike until we got to port. Then 2 of us went back to pick him up (me as pillion) on one bike and i rode his bike back to port with him on back. Once we are through customs, he is free to ride his bike. It wasnt a bung, he even got a receipt!!

My understanding is that technically it's a "surety" being pocketed by the the Euro Dredd. He's welcome to (walk) to court, contest it, and get his money back at some later date.

Since 2006, Britplod has been able to apply £quid pro quo to foreign drivers in the UK. I wonder how often it happens. Thinking

When I worked in the Fixed Penalty Office for the North East I did see these on a weekly basis.

Assuming you attend french court, what are their penalty's for speeding? Could you, for example, turn up and collect your money for turning up, hand it to a friend, who promptly fucks off on the chunnel before they find you guilty of anything?

Obviously it would be retarded if you could, but this is the French we are talking about after all.

French plod puts a speed traps for Brit vehicles rolling off the ferry at Calais and the Chunnel as well. Never seen one on the way back but then again, I'm usually exhausted and taking it really easy. I always assume there is one and unaware Brits are easy pickings.

They do do this. They know people will rush back to the ports and give it a bit of extra welly. Merci, say the French 5-0.

Couple of years ago we were in a car convoy going over to Le Mans - sat at ~90 so what, 8mph approx over the posted limit when a police bike came down the ramp behind us and set off after the convoy leader. Did him something like 100 euros on the spot for speeding, then did him the same again for forgetting his hi viz jacket when getting out of the car (even though he was carrying it and it was in the car in accessible reach like it should be) and then let him on his way again.

The thing that always stuck in my mind about it was that I distinctly remember getting bullied out of the way by some French local doing 90+ sitting 2 inches off my ass, which was the first I saw of Le Jambon. I always wondered why he didn't pick on his fellow compatriot as he disappeared into the distance. To this day I struggle find any reason why the English convoy was an easier hit....

What happens if you don't have the money?

Years ago, I along with 2 others were stopped rushing to the ferry and given on the spot fines of 900ff (about £100) each.
It was a lot of money, more than a weeks wages in those days

Between us we had something like 700ff so they took us straight to the gendarmerie to speak to a magistrate.
He counted up what we had, gave us back 10ff each for food and sent us on our way.

Whether or not that sort of policy still exists, I don't know

got a 235 euro fine and a nice little receipt.

they had a decent little production line going, pulling people, extracting euros and writing receipts.

Just do your research before you go and decide what size fine you can afford and whether you want to risk a ban.

I think I worked on 25kph over the limit on a trip to the Pyrenees in 2007, although I got slightly carried away once or twice - the maximum speed on my GPS said 178mph when I got home Shocked

The trick is that nobody who has paid a surety ever attends Le Tribunal Froglish.

If the punishment for minor speeding is an excessively massive fine plus a ban, it cant be much worse for not stopping Laughing

Take a very, very fast bike so you can attempt to outrun them, of relatively low value, just in case it gets confiscated. if they are just after easy money, its unlikely they will fire up an expensive heli just to catch one speeder Thinking

Infact, probably cheaper to buy said bike over in france. The froggy plates will probably avoid you getting pulled in the first place Thumbs Up

10 miles away from Calais planning to cross the English Channel I wouldn't attempt that. On the way to Belgium or Germany an 10 miles from the border I would be tempted to do it. I wouldn't go back via France though Wink
