So, cast your minds back 2 weeks ago. i receive a tank through the post, i clean out my carbs an all is well with my bike...Oh how we laughed as all of my running woes were behind me

fast forward to tonight, i arrange to go to a bike meet at a local pub (Scotch Piper), as my bike has been all good since fitting the new tank/ cleaning carbs etc get as far as bickerstaff an the bike is hesitating an then lunging all over the place an really rough idle

we arrange to meet up with other people at a garage, so pull in an stop the bike, sat there for 20mins or so, go to start the bike an nothing...it turns over but doesn't even try to start, notice there is white smoke from exhaust (doesn't smell like oil - but has a weird horrid smell)

finally get it going with a bump, on the motorway going back it wont go over 70, after i stopped at a set of lights its back to normal (going past 70)

when i get home its rough again spluttering in low revs an generally being a fuckwit

any ideas before i set it on fire

oh an sorry for the epically long post.....

could be the float needle valve is out of alignment or sticking. Had this problem on my previous bike when it had the same problems as you (white smoke, spluttering etc). Unless someone else corrects me you might have to look at the carb again.

Have you changed the fuel tap? I know mine is rough if running low on fuel maybe that's clogging it up

Cheap petrol can + length of hose from B&Q is how I drain my tank when needed.

That's a euphemism isn't it. Still, I wouldn't like to criticise another's wank techniques.

Water in the carb(s). Drain into a receptacle, look for evidence of water.

If you find water, drain the first half gallon out of the tank with the tap set to reserve. Water is heavy, it sits on the bottom of the tank. Separate off the water, pour the fuel back in the tank, and add a cupful of meths. Meths will bind with water and provide something with a fighting chance of igniting when mixed with enough petrol.

on the way back last night (after we bumped it)

coming down the slip road onto the motorway it wasn't exactly quick, but it was still pulling, i got to 70 an went into 6th where the revs started to die, drop to fifth an the revs came back up but the throttle was pinned an it was going no faster

if that helps!?

If this was a few months on I'd say those symptoms could describe carb icing. So a fuelling issue. So in the carb/fuel tap/some gunge in there area?
