Sat at work discussing this with a colleague and, in the absence of being able to check t&c's of insurance at the moment, thought I'd ask for the voice of experience.

If insured fully comp on a bike, are you granted 3rd party insurance on all other bikes, assuming permission etc. like tends to be standard with car insurance?

Cheers

Check Driving other cars/bikes is never standard. FC seems to make no difference.

depends entirely on the insurer and if it's printed on your certificate

it'll be on your certificate of insurance if you are covered.

Every insurance policy i have had for the last few years has been sent via email and this is retrievable whenever I want....

Check your policy. Sometimes it's not on there FC or not if you're under 25 for example. I'm a named driver on a car policy, been driving for 4 years but I'm under 25. The other 2 people are insured TP for other cars but I'm not.

Hmmm. I'll have to double check. Every car insurance policy I've ever had, since turning 25 or so, has allowed me to drive other vehicles, and I've clarified that as part of the quote. In fairness, that's probably answering my own question.

As for 25 - unfortunately I've been more than 25 for so long I can't remember what it was like not to be. Sad

No, not always, and I've had plenty of TPFT policies where I can ride other bikes.

My last 3 years worth of TPFT policies on my bike have it included, and so have the last 5 years of FC on my cars.

But I always see it as an extra, not something automatically included Thumbs Up

Not necessarily.

The only answer to any of the riding/driving other vehicles questions is to read the small print of your policy.

Sauce?

The only time I think it could matter is if you leave it somewhere, like on the road to go to the shops, as the 3rd party seems to only cover you to ride or drive, not possess.

So ok while you ride it, park it up and leave it somewhere and it then becomes and uninsured vehicle parked on the roadside.

Maybe.

This is the answer.

My bike policy doesn't allow me to ride bikes less than 20 years old or so (it's a vintage policy, I'll have to check exact age of bikes myself). Car insurance lets me drive any car and does not mention if other car has to have insurance. Some policies do say other vehicle must be insured. As said, depends on your policy.

The other thing to do is agree 'you bin it, you've bought it'. Will lead to a whole load of bother if you don't...

I'm TPFT and can. If I remember correctly however there is a limitation on my policy preventing me from riding bikes of less than 300cc. Figure that one out!

Hi, this is me first post Very Happy

If the other vehicle was not insured then it would not be taxed so would not be road legal.

Surely even if your insurance still applies the vehicle could be towed away due to no tax?

Note of caution though: Pryor means that seizure is unlawful based on the plain wording of the Certificate of Insurance, if you produce it at the time.

I'd read the policy document as well, because if it contradicts the certificate, you may find yourself having to go through much the same extended process as Mr Pryor did in order to reach Grown Up Court.

Splendid entrance, well spotted.

However, it could legally be on its way to or from an MOT, and that's not a hypothetical situation. If you want to MOT an uninsured, SORNed bike languishing in the shed without splashing out on insurance (i.e. you just want to sell it), then you can get a suitably insured chum to ride it to and from the MOT, job done.

What I've found is insurers didn't offer me riding other bikes until I turned 25, then all of a sudden it started turning upon my policy (for both cars and bikes). I'm TPFT on both now and both let me ride/drive other peoples vehicles.

...as said above though check wording. You may find other vehicle must also have insurance running. Insurance companies are slipping that in now without actually telling you unless you ask.

So to summarise - possibly, not definitely, and if I do, make sure it's on the way to an MOT and buy it if I break it.

This legal stuff is easy!
