If muffs are so great, why don't they make gloves out of the same stuff?

Or is that what lobster gloves are?

Muffs have an air gap that retains the warms while not impeding the controls, if you had gloves like that they would need to be double skinned with an air gap to be effective, that would change the way the controls handle because they would need to be quite large to get the same effect.

i regularly see a courier who uses muffs and just fingerless gloves in the winter, they must work well enough for him

It's all about the wind chill - keep your hands dry and stop the wind from blowing over them, lightweight gloves are all you need.

I always used them when I was a courier, although they weren't as sophisticated as some of the types available now.

You could make gloves out of that, but I doubt you'd want to wear them.

Muffs stop the wind AND have a big 2-3 inches air gap insulation inside, how exactly you do gloves with 2 inches gap around your fingers?

The problem with all gloves is the cold wind goes around your fingers no matter what is the material. Without muffs the wind sucks out warmt from your gloves. To have the same effect you need gloves like this:

Only problem I had with my muffs is they rubbed the paint off the fairing.

Could be because it was a cheap rattle can job. Just paid £500 for a full spray and worried it'll happen again.

As well as the aspects above (no thermal bridge), there's also the waterproof aspect. My urbano's have always been 100% waterproof, while never found gloves that are so. However, the muffs are made of a less flexible material with less but bigger seams which also wouldn't be reasonable on gloves.

This. I put mine back on (Urbano ones) the other day and the deluge yesterday saw me arrive home with dry hands. It was that bad the waterproof boots I had one are now winging their way back to RST because they were waterlogged instead of waterproof.

Muffs. Keep the wind and rain off and warmth in.

I think I know why muffs are 100% waterproof and gloves not so. Material for gloves need to be breathable and the muffs usually use neopren which is used from divers and its 100% waterproof no need to have breathable material in muffs. You cant use neopren or any material that is 100% waterproof and not breathable for gloves because your hands will be completely wet from sweat. Hence all gloves allow sweat to evaporate.

I can't think of any muffs made out of the neoprene you would see used by divers.
The 'breathable' thing is often gone on about, but if you're not hot enough to be sweating decently, it's not really an issue. While if you're too hot, it's an issue regardless, or if you hands are soaking wet from rain anyway. You do get neoprene over-mitts which don't really have space for air circulation. Again, minimal seams and so on, which isn't really possible on gloves.

Today I found my winter gloves, which last year I left them in the garage, on the floor. I didnt really want to put my hands in them, have you seen my photos thread? Laughing Anyway they are crash damaged so not much good.

As I have 2 bikes, I dont want to be spending £50 each on muff. Where are the cheap muffs?

My brothers bike has hand guards, they look less shit than muff and appear to help. Im tempted to bodge some guards and then DIY some mini muffs over the top. CBR's do not have much clearance between levers and fairing Sad

Has anyone crashed in muffs yet? Any reason it might prevent hand removal if thrown over the top?
