we had a fire at my school, we laughed at the teacher who came running across the field with a fire extinguisher and turned tale as the hut reached flash point, and then booed the fire brigade when they turned up
we all got lectured about the perils to firemen of bunking off school, when someone was reported missing, it turned out he'd broken his arm playing rugby, and was fobbed off by the school nurse as a time waster, and took himself off down to casualty to get it treated

I've been shown the series of global emails that went out to the computing science departmentwhen the Edinburgh University computing science building caught fire (which eventually took out a 7 storey block of buildings on the Cowgate/South bridge and took out a cray supercomputer).
They were increasingly frantic along the lines of "Guys, we can see you on the CCTV, the fire alarm is going off for a reason, the building IS on fire and it's got the the second floor now. You need to leave the building immediately!". Then "This really is not a drill. I can't believe you're still sat there ignoring this. THE BUILDING IS ON FIRE! I'm cutting the power in 30 seconds.".
Mind you, the university lot had some funny ideas about fire drills. They did an unannounced drill at my halls of residence. I duly appeared at the exit carrying a fire extinguisher which I had picked up from my third floor corridoor and left it at the entrance. They started bawling me out about how I was in trouble for "Interfering with firefighting equipment.". This is while the fire alarm was literally (in the literal sense) still going off. We had a heated discussion on the merits of picking up and carrying a fire extinguisher with you when attempting to exit a building via six flights of stairs and three corridoors in the case of a fire until they admitted they were wrong. As I recall I lead with "Don't be so fucking stupid.".
I keep it simple at work. Our fire briefing has only three things you have to do in case of a fire. 1) Raise the alarm. 2) Exit the building. 3) Assemble in the car park. I elaborate that 1) Is achieved by either hitting a break-glass or shouting "Fire-Fire!" and calling the fire brigade. I also stress that fire extinguishers are only present to facilitate part 2 and are more useful for breaking windows than putting out fires. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. I worked in a door factory once.
Fire safety briefing went like this
1, there are exits everywhere, when you move onto a work station check where the nearest is.
2, if the fire alarm goes off, get out. You are in a door factory surrounded by wood and glue, it will go up and quickly. If you wish to grab a fire extinguisher you can, but it's weight might slow you down ____________________ Looking to pass your CBT / Bike tests in Bury Lancashire? try www.focusridertraining.co.uk Would recommend.

I can imagine, in the hysteria, people walking through doors that were in a frame for testing haha. It'd be the worst horror film in the world! ____________________ I'm Sam; Northern, Ginger, Lover

They used to do them weekly at my old work
Which lead to everyone ignoring it when it was a genuine alarm activation.

We all started ignoring fire alarms at work when we all assembled outside, the managers looked around, and went everyone's here. There's no f**king way to know who's in the building, people are coming and going all the time.
So yeah every Thursday fingers in ears at 11 ____________________ Yamaha MT-03 '08 (crashed)

Hi
Used to be a fire marshal where I used to work. At least meant I was one of the last ones out so had to spend less time standing in the cold .
We were pretty much never told about fire drills in advance. The exception was when they wanted a victim for the escape chair. As the one disabled person wasn't keen they needed a volunteer. Easy way down the stairs and a nice change for the day.
That said for ages we had loads of fire alarms. Think they had a severely over sensitive sensor in the room that held the batteries for the UPS, and even a bit of dust just outside the building could set it off.
All the best

When I was at school, they used to do fire drills as a punishment. |
