I ride through Sheffield centre most days and see loads of people trying the bus lanes in town that are not for bikes. Only like 30% are allowed bikes so have to keep an eye.

Did it mention where/have a photo?

Cycle through wicker daily and its quite heavily signed but I guess if you're not familiar with the area you could quite easily end up going down it, distracted by Sheffield's truly awful road network.

This.
it is well signed but again sheffield's roads are stupid. the back routes you have to take to get around that area are ridiculous

Ffs I do not think my car is a bus or believe it has the right to go into a bus lane, the road layout in the area is dreadful and very confusing and I got into a bus lane without realising it as do thousands of others if you read the link I posted.

I think it's fair to say there were clues.

1x CCTV enforcement camera
1x Full Width Road Marking
3x Bus Lane Only signs
Fucktonx of Buses

https://goo.gl/maps/aWJui is looking down the wicker (green lane is the bus route that takes you into the city centre) not sure which way Ariel approached from however as it's possible to hit it from a few directions.

The Wicker/Neepsend area of Sheffield is the city's red light district and it's not unknown for male motorists to be distracted whilst driving through the area.
What was the nature of your visit to that area of Sheffield, Wallace?

Thanks Glen, the road markings make it look obvious but I was totally lost and honestly did not see any signage, I have no idea where I entered it or how long I was on it.

Fully agree that the bastard layout of Derek Dooley Way and local area is deceptive in places.

I am sure it is a ploy by council to a) save money on signs and road paint, and b) generate money from bus gate fines.

I haven't been caught myself, but I have seen many people pay more attention to their satnav than the road markings/signs and come a cropper.

Side note, I see absolutely no reason why bikes using ALL the bus lanes and bus gates in Sheffield would cause any hindrance to the buses. If minicabs and taxis are allowed to clog up the bus lanes, why not motorbikes of which there are far fewer, and take up much less room.

For the probable answers to this see points A and B raised above.

True true.

Hopefully they will continue to phase them into the rest of the bus lanes. The ones you are allowed in result in a lot better cross-town progress for bikes and ease congestion ever so slightly as a result, for the cars who can't use them.

Yes it is. Got lost around that area trying to take bike to have stainless collector box fitted. GPS utterly hopeless and couldn't keep up. Road signs, directions and markings confusing.

On topic, if on a bike I'd argue that I thought motorcycles using bus lanes was government policy, as detailed in this DfT pdf from 2007.

The road layout of the Wicker is pants. It's fine for us locals that know the area but I imagine for visitors it's quite easy to end up going through the bus gate.

FYI motorbikes can go in all bus lanes in Sheffield, but none of the bus gates (of which the Wicker is one). We can also go in the new bus lane on Penistone Road when they finally finish that - I emailed them to make sure.

If anyone's visiting Sheffield soon and has to go past the Herries Road juction with Penistone Road in/on a vehicle with more than 2 wheels - find another route, they've royally fucked up the traffic there with temporary traffic lights.

This is a weird one...

Last year (just after I passed my driving test) I took the car to work for about a week, and went that way every night. Got hit with 6 x £60 fines (reduced to £30 if I paid within 7 days). I do go that way every night on the bike though, and never been hit with a fine?
