Right, now I have a problem with 1st gear. In early mornings I don't let the bike warm up as it's a little too noisy and there are a lot of old nice people on my street, it wouldn't be fair on them. Anyway, I roll the bike back and turn so I'm facing slightly downhill on my driveway, start her up, select 1st gear and she struggles as if the gear hasn't engaged fully. I always give it a sharp tap down to get into 1st as I've been told this is the best way! So, I have to flick it up to 2nd asap to get her going. After that she's spot on. This only happens on my drive when I'm facing down a slight hill. It never happens on the flat or even uphill? Could this be related to my previous post which I have just updated? See link below. Cheers for any help!

Define, please.
Revs rise but the bike doesn't move? = clutch cable is slack, springs are soft, plates are on the way out.
Bike lurches when the gear is engaged? = clutch cable needs tightened or clutch is binding a bit from cold - which is fairly normal, just be ready for it.
Engine hesitates while pulling away? = Nothing to do with the gears. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

After reading your other post, I definitely think you have a problem with the clutch plates. The 'burning clutch' smell is quite distinctive, and the fact that the problem is worse when facing downhill, when there is probably more oil in the clutch area, suggests you need to remove the clutch cover for a closer look.
I wouldn't just replace the friction plates though, whilst you have everything apart, replace all of the plates, and the springs too, and double-check the basket for wear or damage - to be sure of a thorough job! ____________________ Honda Varadero XL125(V8)

Hi. Sorry. The bike hesitates when pulling away in 1st. Should also have said I've just put a new clutch cable on. When I put cable on I had to wind the handle bar adjuster nearly all the way out to tighten it. This doesn't seem right to me? I've just had an op today so I will be readjusting the cable when I'm back to normal. Anymore advice appreciated. Thanks. |
