I'm new to biking and picked up a little Honda Cbr125r (2004 plate)
All was well for the first two weeks until i was riding it and it just died on me.. I realised it was just no fuel so i topped up and since then
There has been non stop problems. It started when i didnt ride for a day went back to it the next morning and the bike would struggle to start. The Neutral light was on but it just struggles to start just clicking over and over again. I used the choke and it worked but ever since i just have to hold the electric start button without reving or choke for about 30seconds then it will eventually start but it doesnt feel or sound the same as before the problem. I originally thought it was the battery so i got a new one and it continues to do the same. Starting after a minute of holding in the button. 2nd problem is ive it park up outside my work and i went to put the key in to turn it on from lock steering and it doesnt turn.. Whats going on?? Should i get a new key cut? And does anyone know whats going on with the start up? Thanks for reading if you've gotten this far.. Aprectiate any help,

James

Hi, we have a Workshop section where you'll get better assistance.

Sounds like a classic case of sucking crud from the bottom of the tank and clogging the idle jet. CBRs seem to be quite prone to it, I've seen one do it and heard about several others. Bear in mind that this is a remote diagnosis based on an ass-u-me-umption, comes with no warranty.

First thing you should do is buy and fit a cheap inline fuel filter to help prevent it happening again.

If it's a clogged jet then the carb will have to come out (or at least the float bowl off), jets out and clean them, ideally with compressed air. The idle jet is tiny, you don't want to be poking any bits of wire or similar down there unless you've got no other choice.

You can pay someone to do it but the plastics need to come off and workshop time doesn't come cheaper because you've got a 125. It's not that complicated an operation, I've done it at the roadside (on a naked bike).

Thanks Roger. Ive just tried getting it to start and now holding the electric start button for 30seconds doesnt work. I tried the choke again and it didn't work either and i didnt want to keep trying it incase i flood the bike. Now it shows no sign of working and i think their is a fault with the electric start because when i push the button it hardly ticks at all and sometimes does nothing. I managed to bump start it to get home from work but it looks to me that its a garage job. Where are you located?

I'd drop by and help, but it'd be a bit of a day trip. Wink

Any bike mechanic or garage will be able to clean the carb. If you can find a mobile one who will come to you then so much the better.

The battery might just be flat but while you're fettling have a look at it. If it's a "wet cell" battery that looks something like this...

... then check the levels in each cell and top up with distilled water (available for pennies in most supermarkets). It's a commonly neglected item.

Oh, and now would be a good time to start putting penetrating fluid on the fairing fasteners. Plusgas or similar by choice, WD-40 if you don't have anything better to hand.
