Do you mean you're thinking about buying a Nissan Micra, the highly popular (?) supermini "middle aged woman about town" car to drive during the winter?

What year are you looking at?

K10 - Don't waste your time
K11 - Watch for rusty sills and crossmember, not many none-rotten left. Also are prone to have issues with the air flow sensor needing to be resoldered on the throttle body every few months.
K12 - Avoid early ones as they had shitty cam chains, probably too pricey for what you're suggesting?
K13 - Probably too new for what you're looking at?

Realistically around 40mpg, economical at the time, but remember technology has moved on.

There are better cheap cars about these days. And with the rust issues that were quite wide spread when I had a few 6 years ago, will be a major hassle now.

Nissan ran drain tubes into the rear quarters with no hole in the panel, so most have sills that are rusted from inside out, and massive holes in the front crossmember.

What cars for instance.

I presume he's referring to the Micra,

The engines in them have a very good reputation for being very robust but they are getting on a bit, most older ones have been bought up cheap by takeaway drivers (round my way anyways)

As already said, while a fairly rot free one would not be a bad choice there are other cars such as Skoda Fabia, Kia Picanto, Kia Rio etc that are a bit newer and equally viable for what you want.

Prone to rear wheel bearings going and they need pressing out. Listen for noise under load.

Don't bother with the home made press in the Haynes manual - did that and it just bent. Took the hub to an engineering shop and it took 6 tons in their press to get it out.

Might be just unlucky but the local parts shop say they sells lots of rear bearings, ours was an 04.

How many miles do you expect to do? Just this may mean you don't have to have a little pap car but a fuel guzzling beast that people don't want because you get 25mpg and not 40. But waft around in luxury.

I had a K11 Micra as my first car. Having never driven another car apart from my instructor's diesel mk2 Fiesta it seemed fine. Once I'd trundled around a bit in a Renault Trafic, it seemed boring by comparison.

I loved it because it was a car when I had hitherto had no car. But it's probably about the most joyless car... ie the furthest you'll ever get from a bike.

Clutches are weak. I bought one for 35 quid and had an independent garage fit it for 70. This was a *long* time ago.

Do you remember the commercials when they brought out the bubble
shaped micra. They combined two words to make a new one....

This, the facelifted K11 with coil packs rather than a distributer was after the Nissan-Renault merge, and had Renault electronics and gearbox. AVOID!

And if the keyless ignition fails it costs more than the car is worth to fix.

Standard bikertomm advice: Get a standard Saxo VTR and re-live your youth.

Can pick them up for peanuts. Real world 52+MPG.

Mine's done almost 70,000 miles trouble free. Just clicked on 125k.

And if does go wrong, it cost's peanuts to fix. And if it goes majorly wrong, it cost nothing in the first place. Chances are, it might not even go wrong.

Thumbs Up

Don't get a saxo if you have wide feet, I nearly bought one but on the test drive I kept hitting throttle and brake at the same time, also had to twist my ankle to get more than half throttle. Probably Citroens most rugged car ever though.

I ended up with a corsa, if 'meh' was a car it would be a corsa...

If I was going to get a citroen mate id get a other zx use to get it sideways every roundabout. The joys of youth.
