There's probably water getting somewhere that shouldn't get wet.

I really very much doubt it is the exhaust gasket. You would need to get a serious amount of water in the exhaust to make it cut out.

More detail needed really. How does it cut out, dead stop, misfire for a while first? Does it do it while you're moving or stopped? How soon can you get it started again (ages isn't very specific)?

basically you will be going along and it will start popping and banging ,and then the engine will die , the bike will turn over but wont start for like 20 mins, (this was on the way to where i work ) parked it in the carpark and after a 10hr shift went back to the bike and started as if nothing had happend

I think you were probably along the right lines with the new sparkplug cap (though I wouldn't have jumped on it as a first reaction). I'd suggest a liberal coating of WD40 around the general area for starters.

I presume the new cap came with the rubber seal that prevents too much water getting to the area? Is it in good condition?

Also I presume your front mud guard is present and unbroken?

Popping and banging is reminiscent of reg/rec failing on my old CG.
So coupled with added water maybe that's an area to investigate?

Also I'm reminded of the thread about cbr500 flasher failing due to water damage (here). Maybe new Hondas aren't as waterproof as old ones? Confused Thinking

going to get a local honda garage to look at it as ive not go no experience with electrics so i'd rather pay for someone who knows what they are doing

and yes the cap came with a new rubber boot and its all in good condition and the front mudguard barely has a scratch on it lol so id presure its not broken in any way

and i did try spray everything with wd40 but that was no good as it still did the cutting out issue

What about the rain getting in to the kill switch or the side stand switch.

Sounds almost certainly like a fault with the HT side of the ignition to me. As suggested, you could try drowning the lead, caps and coil in WD40 to see if it helps. You could have a crack in the casing of the coil, or a failed HT lead that is shorting out when damp.

Only way to really sort out a problem like this is replace each component at a time, or to save time, replace everything on the HT side.

You could also try working out which parts are getting most damp when it is raining.

Most of the electrical connectors, especially ignition circuitry, on my GN has been cleaned up and reassembled with silicon grease since I got it. All I know is that it put up with 4+ hours of torrential (as in, rain cutting down visibility to about 100m) rain and never skipped a beat.

Of course I can't say how the bike would have done if I hadn't siliconified the connectors, but in my eyes it defo helped.

My sons Honda CLR used to cut out and missfire in the rain. I tried all kinds of stuff to correct the problem. One day when I had the tank off (for another reason) I found that the spray coming off the back of the front wheel was aimed directly at the coil (the coil was covered in dirt and mud). A wee mudflap on the back of the mudguard cured the problem.

Hi
Without intending any insults, has your plug cap got both rubber pieces on it and are the good and tight?, I had this when I got my CG and it spluttered and died in heavy rain, put a new NGK plug cap on and its been fine ever since, I think they will degrade over time and use. It cost about £3.

I used to have a similar problem on my yamaha whereby the 12v side of my ignition coils and the connecting wires would get soaked in the rain and stop working. Locate and spray with wd40. Look for any exposed connectors, spray with wd40, see if this helps. once you have found the parts of the system that are vulnerable, protect with "damp start" or appropritate grease, or replace connectors with waterproof connnectors.

I found the ugly but practical addition of a pyrimad plastics fenda extenda works really well. Apparently this also helps with the front plug on an sv650. might work for you, but find the problem first.

Try not to kill yourself by experimenting in heavy traffic. Losing a cylinder on a twin in heavy traffic on a dual carriageway with no hard shoulder is scary enough, losing a cylinder on a single is probably worse.

On a related note to this, I have seen two CBF's at the side of the road in heavy rain in the last month or so. Both on the A13 so possibly the same person both times.

Still, IMO there's more nails than wood in the CBF's coffin these days!
