Been having a look at the oily innards of the little beast.

Shims appear to need a little shimming. The ones in there are in increments of 0.02mm but the ones I can get are in increments of 0.05mm which makes choosing a little tricky.

I can choose between a valve ending up (in theory) at the lower end of spec, or 0.01 over spec.
If I put a full set of shims in I can have everything consistent at the high end of the range or 0.01 over and they won't need doing again for a very long time.
Or I can have them all in spec but a mish-mash of high and low values and the low ones will need doing again soon.
Advices?

Confused

Have you had the shims out and looked at the numbers on them/measured with micrometer?

I've never come across shims that are in increments in anything other than .05mm.

You need to know the old shim sizes to work out which sizes you need.

Surely if you want to go .02mm than your valve clearance can't be out of spec (usually have around .04mm range for the clearance).

I wouldn't have thought a shim one hundredth of a millimeter out either way would make the difference of life or death for your engine....................someone more experienced might know better, of course.

I've had them out and looked at the numbers, I don't have a micrometer. (Maybe I should get one.)

An example of what I mean is this; I have an exhaust clearance that should be 0.25 (OK range is 0.23-0.27) but I measure 0.21, the shim in there is 2.12 so I need a 2.08 to get it right. Can't have that so it's either a 2.10 which should give a clearance of 0.23 which is within spec but right at the tight end, or it's a 2.05 shim which should give a clearance of 0.28 - apparently looser is better, but that's out of spec.

If I follow the specs to the digit I'll have one tight and one loose exhaust valve in each cylinder.

The quoted clearance is what you want to achieve at time of adjustment. If you're on the bottom limit that's acceptable but it's preferable to aim for the upper limit given a choice. Achieveing 0.28 where the upper limit is 0.27 is perfectly fine IMO.
