Hi guys,

New bike, had it for around 3 weeks and i've been punished with a nail in the back of my tyre (why did this not happen with my 125??). I'm going garage tomorrow to get it plugged. I'm wondering if this is purely a short term solution? How long do they last? As I don't want to be stuck 30 miles from home with a flat tyre.... Trying to work out whether its worth buying a new tyre. It's super annoying as these tyres dont even have 500 miles on them!

Depends who you listen to or how paranoid you are. Me, a professional plug will last the life of the tyre or even a home plug job if you do it correct. Others will say temp but I would only say temp if close to or in the side.

That makes me feel a bit better. Didn't fancy forking out for a brand new tyre when there are christmas presents that need buying. It's more or less bang in the middle of the tyre, so hopefully this should make it easier. Will also let the garage plug it for me as i don't trust myself lol.

If the tyre is removed and plugged from the inside it should be a permanent repair.

Some people don't like plugged tyres but I don't think it's based on any facts more they just don't ''feel'' safe about them.

I've plugged my own tyres before and not had a problem.

What make of Tyre?

As Avons have a guarantee if wear is less than a certain amount.

I find the rubber string thingies I use for roadside puncture repairs last the life of the tyre and never leak, so a professionally fitted tyre plug should be even better.

Have done trackdays on plugged tyres before.

As long as it is done correctly, it will be a permanent repair.

I plug my own (but then I suppose that owning a tyre machine puts me more in the professional category Wink ) and have ridden on plugs down to the tyre's nylon belting, at speeds approaching that of the speed of sound. Wink

No kittens have been killed - yet!

I suppose it all depends upon your approach to risk taking and whether your sphincter will clench up every time you exceed 50mph, only you can answer that one.

I would just fit an inner tube to the tire of a 125...
even if it is tubeless

No problems with a professional plug in the rear of the tyre. I'm a little more wary about the front having one.

The tyre I had before the current one had a plug for near enough it's whole life. No problems what-so-ever even hitting triple figures regularly.

Well I plugged it and all was fine.... until on Friday I had went into a nail. Get to the garage to get it plugged again and then they see ANOTHER nail! This one was on the edge of the tyre plus plugging it three times doesn't sound smart. So there I am sat in the garage forking 150 quid over for getting a new tyre with it fitted. I'm sure I could have possibly got it a bit cheaper but when your stuck in a garage with one wheel you're not too bothered.

They put in some Bridgestones BT-023 on. No idea if they're good but hopefully they should be.

Was gutted as well as those tyres probably had no more than 1100 miles on.

I would be trying to work out where I was picking up so many nails and modifying my routes to avoid them at this rate.

I think he's saying it's not a 125. I don't think I'd trust a tube in a tubeless tyre at 180mph.

Which side is the back of a tyre anyway?

Didn't someone on BCF once plug a tyre something ridiculous like twenty times without a problem?

I run on BT-023s, found them to be good tyres.

I run BT-023s, very reliable and confidence inspiring rubber. It's the earlier Battlax tyres that were notoriously shite.

Are you having a laugh??? The Battlax did for tyres what Sinclair did for home computing a decade earlier.

I would definitely check to work out how you're picking up so many punctures.

I would also get this kit, it is amazing and is a professional plug without removing the tyre. BCF peeps have seen me plug a tyre in 5 minutes flat with this kit and be on the go again.

Yes I'm unsure exactly why I'm getting so many nails. I work at a school (teacher) and I am going in between 2 buildings (the school and a youth centre I also teach at during the day). The 2 buildings are in a residential area so no idea why I'm getting so many punctures.

There's a tiny chance it could be some little bastard kids but I'm pretty doubtful of that. I park my bike on the curb near the salt bin at my school though and there has been glass around that area, so It wouldn't suprise me about the nails.

Just have to be extra vigilant on where I park from now on lol...

Yes. And get the kit I've recommended too.

Are you on commission? Wink

I agree do though, I'd recommend that one (although perhaps not at that price). I had a puncture on the Burgman that strings weren't sealing properly, and that mushroom kit sorted it right out.
