When I was checking my valve clearances the other week I had the cams out to measure the shims. Haynes manual says something about lubing the cams with a mixture of high moly content lube & motor oil.
Now I needed the bike so I just filled a syringe with motor oil, liberally squirted every bearing surface and put it back together.

Parts have arrived so I now need to go back in there and install my new shims etc.

There's the big tub of Moly/Lithium grease in Halfords but it doesn't specify what % content it is, I suspect not much.
Should I track down some kind of special moly lube or did I do the right thing with the syringe of motor oil?

Ive only ever rebuilt engines using new oil as lube, never used moly grease.

Use assembly lube.

This sort of thing.

Although you're probably ok with oil.

Don't use anything other than the correct engine oil on engines with a wet clutch.

Using assembly lube on cams won't affect the clutch.

You don't use much- it's dear!

when I did my R1 valve clearances I made up some molly oil ... simply mixed the molybdenum disulphide grease with the engine oil till it was runny enough to apply wit a paint brush but sticky enough to stay put when applied.. you wont need much it was surprising how far a little went.

this stuff is as good as any... you already got the oil to mix wit it.

PS.. this was done as part of a 24k service which included an oil & filter change as was due ... done immediately after the engine was first started after new shims were in place.
