Hi everyone,

I got 2003 SV 650 with digital speedometer. I went for a trip across UK last weekend and 30 mile after I set off my speedo started to behave dodgy. I was riding at constant 70 MPH and it was showing 57-62-78-49-56..., looked like random numbers changing every 0.5s. It was showing normal, stable values under 30mph, but few miles further only thing I could see was 0 and nothing changed since then. Does this symptom indicate any specific failure, of is it gonna be a trial and error now ?

ThankS!

Take off the sprocket cover and look to see if the castle nut is missing off the end of the output shaft. Might even be a hole in the cover.

The speedo drive in the front wheel will no doubt have broken.

It happens when people take the wheel out and dont replace the drive properly as the gearing is plastic.

Cable speedo on a 2003 bike? That's surprising, I assumed they would be using the electronic system by then.

It is digital.

It uses a drive the same as cable, but uses wires instead of the cable.

Strange.

It will be the speedo drive

I've broken 2 in as many years, cheap brittle plastic locating tabs, when these break off it causes the sensor to spin and not sets properly giving varied readings or nothing at all.

Good news is it only costs £20 for the part, bad news is there is not much you can do about it.
