I drove like a knob and got caught out this morning.. Ended up speeding down a dual carriageway cause I was late.. Police in a lovely marked up X5 ended up doing the full length of the carriageway and gunning it back towards me, pulled me into the car and gave me the usual killing kittens lecture etc.

I obviously denied speeding.. He claims I was doing well in excess of 125mph (I'm on a 125 for crying out loud!) now here's the killer, he said he was going to take my bike off me because I obviously had a 250cc engine inside my small little 125 Honda CBR, and it was also illegal to have anything other than a standard exhaust on, which gives it even more power than a 250cc. Tried telling him it even says 125 on the side of the fecking engine, but apparently he had been riding motorbikes for 40 odd years so I can't pull the wool over his eyes. I'm not sure what he's been smoking, but i'd love some of it! Embarassed Shocked

After going over the bike with a toothcome and an attitude he said he was gonna let me off speeding, but he's going to stick me on for lack of L plates and advised me to get the engine checked out. He also wants me to put the stock can back on by the time he sees me again.

He gave me a slip and said someone will be in touch shortly.. the ticket just says no front or rear L plates.. I know I should of had them on.. but i never got round to putting them on when I bought it a few weeks ago.

What's gonna happen now? Points, fine, court? I'm kinda confused and didn't really wanna ask him anything else. Also, would I be okay ignoring his can replacement and engine checked out comments?

Tl;dr drove like a cunt and got caught out, now i'm confused.

It hasn't really scared me, more confused the fuck out of me. But I also wasn't too sure on the legality of after market exhausts. For the L plates, thats 3 points and £60 isn't it?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if the can doesn't have "NOT FOR ROAD USE" stamped on it somewhere, then it's perfectly legal.

Had a cop doing the same thing to me, on the exhaust. And saying my L plate was in a bad position and wants to see it under my L plate and will be on the look out for me. Still waiting for him to see me again.

He was just annoyed because I was being "smart" with him and denied riding "carelessly" because I rode off to 30MPH quickly. Mad Laughing

Doesn't have a stamp like that on it, been speaking to the guy I bought it from (exhaust came fitted), and he said the baffles where removed and he'll drop them round this week.

When I got caught both times I talked my way out of getting done for both Loser plates and got done for only one you say on the ticket it says front and rear so expect no less than six points and a fine.

The normal procedure is an FPN fixed penalty notice which is now £100 I believe and three points.

If it goes to court the maximum fine for driving otherwise in accordance with a licence is up to a £1000 and 3 - 6 penalty points it will depend on the magistrates on the day but normally it is 3 points and a £100 fine plus court fees.

Enjoy.

VOR says front and rear l plates. Oh fuck.

Not sure of the force but i know ours do not have the codes LC20's and its driving otherwise in accordance to licence £100 and 3 points.

Which is probably a much bigger hit on insurance..

70mph dual carriageway? How did you appear to break the speed limit on 125? Laughing

It's a piffling little bookkeeping offence. Dibble was just butthurt about being wrong and shown to be wrong; he rides a Fireblade, right?

There's no such offence as "riding without L plates". It's otherwise than in accordance with your license, and you either have both plates and are in accordance, or you don't have both plates and aren't.

One offence, if they try and prosecute it as two I'd be rejecting the FPN blackmail offer, waiting for a court summons and then contacting the CPS to bargain it down to an admission of one count.

If that particular Dibble tugs you again I wouldn't give him the time of day.

Ash Your exhaust isn't illegal , when it was fitted i noticed an e13 stamp on the can which means its certified for road use (probs not with the baffle out ) but the exhaust has been tested and is legal for road use

forget anything the cop actually said. The only important thing here from all the waffle is he gave you a slip.

What is this slip? was it a bus ticket or a legal document?

It may say no L plates as offence particulars only rather than what you were reported for.

You post is unclear as you appear unhappy about how the copper treated you.

First line of defence. "I can assure you, constable, that when I performed my preflight checks there was plenty of tread on that tyre and all my lights and indicators were fully functional"

Sounds like mr plod was feeling a bit butthurt tbh.

When I got caught speeding on my 125, the cop was reasonably decent and looked the other way when it came to not having a rear L plate. Still cost me £250 though. Crying or Very sad

LC20 is the conviction code that goes on the license not the internal force code and has been since around 1990, before that the code was used for taking and driving away. Nice to know we have another BiB who doesn't know the basics.

HTH Thumbs Up

You don't actually have a license to collect points on, too many points, you'll get a ban and have to apply for a new provisional after the ban expires (unless you already have a car license in which case they'll go on there)

with regards the exhaust, I doubt a road legal aftermarket exhaust for a 125 would put it above the 15bhp limit for L plates.

I'd be complaining about what grounds he had for the stop (noise from un-baffled exhaust might have made him think it was a bigger bike speeding) - would he have known you should be on L plates before pulling you over and seeing your license?

I got a 'producer' for no L plates / riding not in accordance with my license on the M60 - 4 months after passing my test!

I tried to hand him my license a couple of times

No paperwork handed to me, desk sergeant at local cop-shop announced the officer who'd stopped me was a 'knob of the highest order' when told the tale.

EXACTLY what paperwork were you given? What form and what does it say?

Did he caution you in accordance with PACE (you have the right to remain silent etc.)?

Did he say "I am reporting you for consideration for prosecution for the following offence. [INSERT OFFENCE HERE]. Do you have anything to say?". Or words to that effect?

EDIT: Also, offence code PL10?
