PostPosted: 00:44 - 11 Jan 2015    Post subject: PC800 non-starter Reply with quote

I own a 92 PC800 and has been a brilliant bike up until the battery died. Im no mechanic at all and took me a month to figure out i needed to replace the battery which i did and all was good for a short while, then it became a pig to start and now won't start at all !
Ive had the battery checked and thats all good. The only other thing I've done is disconnected the kill switch ( just in case ).
i think the next job is to check the spark plugs ( fairly new ) and thats fuel is getting through.
Is there anything else i can do/check ?
Unfortunately since the non starting it has been kept outside and even the cover has suffered fatal damage in these high winds but think I've sourced another cover for Monday, so been exposed to the elements for a week or so.
Spoken to a few people that know a thing or two about bikes and most think its an electrical problem (but without looking at it )
Im at a bit of a loss as I'm mechanically dumb but its my only form of transport and getting fairly desperate now.
sorry for going on a bit , just would be grateful for any advice . Thanks

Probably your regulator/rectifier has died and the batter is not being charged.

won't even start with a fully charged battery - might that still be the regulator/rectifier ?

Unlikely, does the motor turn over quickly and do the spark plugs have a good spark which is an easy test if unknown?

Generally speaking, this - it's an old Honda, reg/rec failure is a certainty at some point.

But, when you say it won't start, do you mean it won't even turn over, or it spins up a treat but won't fire?

Could be that your charging problem has fried the ECU but more likely it's just not happy about being sat for a few months.

First job - find out if you have a spark. Remove a plug and put it in the plug cap. Make sure it's touching the engine and crank it over. See if it sparks. If it does you probably have a fuelling issue.

The motor turns over as normal but just doesn't fire up.
I did get it running about three days ago and rode it for about 12 miles, which ran fine and ticked over fine. When i got home , switched it off and wouldn't start again.
i don't even own a spark plug spanner so I'm going to have to get one - its next on my list

Not familiar with your model but be careful as this older series of Honda twins actually had 2 plugs per cylinder meaning there might be 4 sparkplugs to look for. This can be identified by looking for 2 sparkplug leads per HT coil. Other problems could be fueling problems such as blocked tank vents, faulty fuel pump and dirty carbs etc , but work your way through the most common and easily fixed problems first. I would suggest you spray something like WD40 into your ignition switch and killswitch first before doing anything drastic, also check if your bike has a sidestand switch and make sure the side stand is up before attempting to start.

Not sure you'll find an ECU on a Pacific Coast, it's just an old VT800 Shadow motor, with twin Keihins.

Semantics. If it isn't points ignition it'll have some form of electronics.

there are 4 plugs and one is notoriously difficult to get out - I've phoned Honda to source me a spanner but even thats gonna take a month !

Im in Eastbourne town centre on the sunny South coast - if anyone could give it a look over i'd be more than happy to pay with endless tea and biscuits.

Gave me a bucket of cement and i'll build you a house - give me an engine and i'm lost !

Tomorrow i'll start working through some of the ideas put forward on here and see what happens

Ever so grateful to everyone thats replied on here as i aint got the first idea !

The NTV650 plug spanner I suspect will do the job with a 3/8ths 12mm socket, universal joint and then an extension in that order, might need a magnet on a stick to get the pug out when undone. Change the plugs, including the front left one which is the one most likely to be failed and it will probably start. Might as well change the air filter as well.

I am actually coming to Eastbourne this evening leaving in an hour or so. I can only spare 10 minutes but I do I have a narrow plug socket you can borrow, so I'll bring that with me and you can post it back. Send me your address and mobile number and I'll right you when I'm en-route.

Weather in Eastbourne today has been shocking so nothings got done. Hopefully pick up the new bike cover tomorrow afternoon, so at least it will be protected from the elements

Well, one step forward i suppose.
Three out of the four spark plugs are easily accessible and none have a spark ! Google the remedy , and it says its the coil. Reading how to check the coil etc i discover the bike has two coils - surely they wouldn't gone both at the same time
Any clues on what my next step should be ?

Get a multimeter and check both coils ?

to say i hate engines would be an understatement !!

Two coils don't die together. 'Dead coil' is the normal 'diagnosis' to no spark, but it's seldom the cause. Having no moving parts and no reason to go wrong except failed insulation they really are a long-lived part.

Check first the power at the coils. They will have one wire that's the same colour on both coils and that's the power feed. If there's no power then you have a switch or fuse problem. If there's power at the coil it could be pickup, ECU or earth.

My money is on the run switch or ignition switch.

as I've stated a number of times now, i don't have a mechanical clue. I will get multimeter later on this evening and start checking things.
Im thinking along the lines of the ignition switch as well . Would i be right in thinking a squirt of WD40 in the ignition and turn it a few times may cure any damp in it that stops it working ? It has been exposed to a lot of rain lately Sad

When you removed the kill switch did you leave the circuit as it should be or in kill?
