Can't get the bandit to idle properly when it's hot. Throttle response off of idle is also poor. Past that it sings like a good'un. Aswell as that it pops and bangs on the overrun.

I've had the carbs off and all seems well, needles don't appear worn etc, set the idle mixture screws to 1 3/4 turns, checked all the rubbers.

Are there any common issues with these things as I'm struggling to sort it.

What do your air filter and spark plugs look like?

Also, how fast is the idle?

Filter is dirty but not too bad.

Forgot to mention the airbox is also wet, pretty sure it's not just petrol either, feels oily.

Plugs are new and don't look too bad, a little black.

A bit greasy airbox is perfectly normal. All the engine breathers are directed there. Thumbs Up

MK1 that'd be a 1996. It's an old engine, and there are possibly carbon deposits in the combustion chamber and all over the plugs = hence a bit black colour. My ZXR sounds like a turbo diesel at idle, but when I go flat out for a while and then back to the idle, it gets much better. The flat out riding cleans the engine. Thumbs Up

No need to be speeding though, there are fuel cleaners, such as STP engine treatment (Sea Foam). You pour that into the tank, mix with petrol and ride the motorcycle, that'll get rid of the carbon deposits for you. I had a '88 GPz and with that cleaner/treatment the bike ran much better, almost like if it needed the additive.

Anyway, ä video or rather audio of the motorcycle idling would be helpful.

Check this, about the a bit black plugs:

It could be a sign you need new float needles or possibly a stuck choke. Either will cause it to be rather rich.

Have a look at the spark plugs and post pics. Best to stick a fresh air filter in at the same time, if only to rule it out.

I used to periodically balance the carbs with one of the cheap tube kits with the ball inside the line, always resulted in a much better throttle response on my bandit. It had quite sensitive carbs i found, maybe it was just me, or the fact that it took me a while to realize that when i was turning the mixture screw, i was turning it half a turn (180) whilst thinking i had turned it a full turn (360), looking back, what a retard! Slow reply on this.

Had the plugs out, they don't look too bad.

40,000 miles on it, no history on the clearances so I guess a carb balance and valve clearances are next.
