£350 for something tatty with tax & test
Anything up to about £1500 for a near-minter selling as a nostalgia piece.
My Uncle had one back when they were new, and he'd definitely pay £1500 for a good one to re-live his youth.
I have the CB 'Seven-Fifty' that has the CBX's engine, and to my mind, as an 'every-day' hack, its a far better bet; with less sophisticated suspension and brakes, less plastic and wiring, its far more DIY maintainable to a decent standard, and takes more readily available tyres, for small sacrifice 'performance' that the CBX wasn't ever really setting a standard for even thirty years ago... so even fact that uncles was first 'Big-Bike' I ever rode, wouldn't get my nostalgia vote, nor would a sub £500 example get my money for budget biking; I'd put it into (as I did) a 'seven-fifty' or now, something more common/popular, like a Blandit 6 or Fazer or 'something' I'd feel more comfy I could more cheaply and easily fix when it wore out, broke or seized.. ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

30 year old bike, 240kg wet, 16" front wheel, 34mpg.
I'd do the guy a favour and take it away for him. Then probably weigh it in for scrap. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

From some-one who rides something that tries to shift 190Kg with less than 20 Hp, designed in the 1930's.. that's a bit rich...
The CBX was, and still is a very under rated and very useful motorcycle, and while I wouldn't go looking for one, if I was offered choice between an '84 CBX750, an '86 CBR600 and an 87 VFR750, I'd take the CBX, now, then or any time in between.
Cast alloy 'Pro-link' (monoshock') rear suspension; 'anti-dive' front forks, sixteen valve DOHC motor, it was, a worthy rival to Kawasaki's class leading GPz750 and the incumbent Suzuki GSX750, and state of the art... for about fifteen minutes!
Honda knew it was as far as they could go with an air-cooled across-the frame-four cylinder design; 95bhp if memory serves, it was as powerful as the VF750, lighter, less convoluted, more reliable and easier to maintain. It was their 'Plan-B', if the water-cooled techno-wonder wasn't well received..... which it wasn't..
Unfortunately, while it had been a good match for a GPz of GSX.... The 'new-breed' arrived in the form of the GPz600R and the GSXR... and so 'Plan C' was put into action, and Honda copied a GPZ600R, and hid the similarities behind Paso fully enclosed body work and called it the CBR600....
VF750 was 90bhp for 250Kg, VFR750, was 100DIN for 230Kg, Jelly mould CBR6 was 85bhp for 199Kg; CBX, 95bhp for 240 'wet'... stats were well within the ball-park, as a credible 'sports-bike' of the era.
As a 'street-bike' in the modern era? STILL not too scruffy; it's as powerful as a older carbed Hornet or steel-frame CBR, with lack of fluids flattering their quoted dry-weight, its 'kerb' weight still isn't that far out of bounds. Riding position is quite nice too, old-skool 'sporty' rather than wide-bar 'street-fighter' or arse up-nose down 'race-rep'; fairing s curiously useful for such a small expanse of plastic; while headlamps for the era were pretty bludy great; 16" wheel 'handling' has always been reputed to be 'curious' but, and old 16" wheel & tyre is not much different in rolling diameter to a modern 17" wheel with low-profile on it; main difference is the 16"er is likely to be narrower, cross-ply.... it did and still does handle 'respectably' on good suspension and good tyres; certainly well enough for more some reasonably spirited riding....
But, that's the crux; in a modern context, it's still not a 'bad' street-bike, for performance; BUT, those wheels do limit tyre choice; and the benefit of that rather nice alloy swig arm are probably rather blunted by sloppy bushes and a shot shocker; trac ati-dive upfront was an unecessary complexity at the time; now its a liability; hence my appraisal; 'cos, the twin-shock 'Seven-Fifty' can be shod with far greater selection of better radial rubber, and that suspension cheaply and easily spruced up with £150's worth of Hagon replacement shocks and a couple of new swing-arm bushes, where the CBX would need a £300 shock and a lot of swearing to re-bush the linkage!
But, as said, still a better bet, in my book than an early CBR or VFR.... might not be as serviceable and liveable as a the Seven-Fifty.... but more so than the V-Four that has the same 18/16 wheel/tyre issue in the pre single sided swig arm model, same issues as far as the more convoluted mono-shock rear suspension with lots of links and bushes and an expensive shocker; and a whole host of its own sniggles in that water cooled motor, with known carb niggles; rads prone to crumbling and plastics prone to going brittle; or CBR6, which is a little more service friendly.. but more likely to be in more dire need of attension!
While as a 'Classsic' of course, you have to have been there to apreciate it, other wise it doesn't 'look' like a classic should.... does it... I mean, like it was designed in the 1930's........ ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!
