Not many of these about, a few, but not common. Not valuable at all but it was a challenge.

As it arrived.

Could you give a small run through of how you got everything so clean?

Look forward to following this one. I'm currently (very slowly) doing a ZZR400k (as well as riding another).

Awesome! Haven't seen one of these in a while a friend of mine had one when we were younger. Basically a ZXR400 motor (with shorter gearing) in a KR1-S chassis (frame/swingarm). Thumbs Up

Different swingarm, the one pictured looks almost identical to the later ZZR d/k models, KR1-S the ends are different. Lots of those parts look like ZZR parts (swingarm, forks, sprocket carrier). I guess when the ZZR followed that bike a lot of stuff followed with it

Basically lots of elbow grease, copious amounts of brake & chain cleaner, and a strong wire brush drill attachment for the engine. All of the other parts have been stripped and re-sprayed.

A lot of parts are common to the ZXR400 H1 which is the model that followed this one, the engine is identical apart from slightly different cam profiles I believe.

Here's a swingarm and fork from a zzr. Fork seems very similar, swingarm appears the same (though maybe different dimensions?).

Here is a ZXR400 H1 swingarm.... very different to your pictured one

Your engine though has no relation to the later ZZR. How much power does that lump put out?

I did say a lot, and not all parts, are common to the H1.

I believe its 59 BHP

I thought yours was the JDM mini version of the ZX10. The ZX10 evolved in to the ZZR1100 (and family) with the mini JDM version being the ZX400k (ZZR400k). No real relation anywhere to the ZXR other than being produced around the same time. I could be wrong though, well not on the ZX10 - ZZR thing, but on yours being the JDM mini 400 version of the ZX10.... though it appears to be.

This is a ZX400g ZX4-f3

Now I was told that this was turned into the first ZXR400 when licensing laws changed in Japan. The engine is definitely the same lump as the ZXR and the Frame is the same apart from the fact that the ZXR has a detachable sub-frame and this one is fixed. I am sure that otehr parts are common to other models, thats pretty common.

This model was only made for one year 1988, and the ZXR was launched in 1989, as the replacement model, or so I am led to believe.

I wouldn't want to put my house on it though. Thumbs Up

I think the ZXR relation (beyond the engine) is wrong but I wouldn't stake my house on it either Laughing

My understanding is

ZX10 evolved/replaced by ZZR1100
ZX4 was the Jap domestic 400 mini thing of the ZX10 so its successor was the ZX400k (ZZR400) in 1990 (hence the commonality on the swingarm and forks)

ZXR400 was the jap domestic mini thing of the ZXR750

All academic though really whatever the "spiritual" successor, I look forward to following this build Thumbs Up
