Any tips on replacing the rear shock on my Bandit. Don't want the rear end collapsing on me or anything Shocked

What I plan to do:
Use a car jack on the frame to take tension off the rear shock (towards the rear end of the frame)
Brick under rear wheel
Undo bolts and take off standard rear shock, replace with new shock.

Can you not suspend the rear of the bike from a beam or A-frame? It would be my preferred option.

Bikes lives in an underground car park, no beams or anything.

Mattress, lay it down.

Alternatively jack it up, axle stands under the foot peg/frame and have someone hold it whilst you undo the bolts fully, loosen them before jacking it up.

All done, used a spare mattress Smile and it was surprisingly easy to do and having someone else helping made it a lot easier.

Shock is noticeably stiffer & im very certain that it's raised the seat height.

Took it for a quick spin & it feels too stiff.
I'm 9stone and about 40% of my riding is with a 9stone pillion.

What adjustments would u recommend?

Less damping. Loosen that nut at the top of the shock a bit.

phone the company you bought it from and ask them the setup for your weight and riding style.

But before you move the preload ring, just check for a grub screw down one of those holes that might need slackening off.
Some makes of shock have them and some don't - so if you can't find one don't panic, unless you can see threads but no screw!

Second hand buy at £87, I have found a fairly local suspension specialist (Revs Suspenion in Birmingam) on the internet. Will give them a call tomorrow and see how much they'd charge to set it up. If it's cheap enough, I'll just let them do there thing Smile

they're good at what they do. rebuilt all the suspension on my gk73a for a very reasonable price.

Supersprox rear sprocket, very good when matched up with a DID x ring chain and JT front sprocket. It's been on for a while now and hasn't needed much adjustment at all Smile Thumbs Up

Also Revs Suspension sounds really good so I'm praying it's not too expensive to have the shock set up.

If you mean the big nut that sits against the spring, that has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with damping -- it's for preload...

Revs suspension quoted me £20 to adjust my shock so that it's suited for me. That's based on the assumption that the shock doesn't need to come off the bike to be adjusted (so all the adjustments points are accessible when the shock is on the bike).

Plan on taking it into them this Saturday to have it adjusted, as that price is a lot cheaper than I first thought it would be.

The plastic knob at the bottom of the shock is to adjust the rebound damping.

The ring at the top does the preload, it has grub screws to secure it.

Loosen the ring off as it appears to be wound up quite a way. You want it so that the bike has about 5-8mm of sag when held up without a rider.

I used a car jack when i changed the shock on my 1999 Hornet. When i unbolted the shock, and took it off, the jack gave way and fell out from under the bike.

I the realised that i could easily support the bike with one hand by holding the pillion grab rail. The rear end was virtually weightless. So i slotted the new shock in and put the bolts through whilst holding the bike up. Was odd. Laughing
