My lads looking at cheap fixer upper to get him mobile as relying on public transport and bicycle has hampered some good job prospects.
having personal transport will open up opportunites

its as above, a Kymoco Pulsar 125, '09 plate
in need of a cam chain
I'll be taking a look at it tomorrow

I know sweet FA about Kymcos but as its single cylinder 4 stroke
( CG clone?) looks pretty simple to me

Any idea on its value and what to offer considering the knackered cam chain and battery?
I'll have a better idea of condition tomorrow but want to have ball park figure in my head

TIA

Parts not listed here

https://www.chinesemotorcyclepartsonline.co.uk/bikes.php

or here

https://www.china-parts.co.uk/

So personally I wouldn't, plenty of cheap copy bikes floating about that the above 2 well established suppliers sell parts for.

(and I know Kymco... Taiwan... etc, etc.... they have a massive factory on the mainland I'd bet that's where the cheap bikes are made).

In good running condition with no camchain issues it's worth about £400-600 depending on cosmetic condition.

Gaskets are a bit expensive & it'll be mega ballache.

I'd be looking to pay no more than £100-150.

PM me an email adress and I'll send over a copy of the engine microfiche, use this to send me back a list of part numbers you think you'll want and I'll price em up for you with some BCF special discount Thumbs Up

I think you got those statements the wrong way round.

Is this "needs a cam chain" or "yeh m8 dont reely know m8 but prolly the cam chain m8 my m8 sed it woz m8"

I have no idea what to expect but its only up
the road and won't have any dosh in my pocket to avoid rash spending spasms.
'Needs cam chain' could mean many things so I'll put me cynical head on.
A snapped chain could be a FUBAR'd engine
A longtime badly worn chain could be an engine full of alloy mush which has ferked up the bearings, many CXs suffered like this.
A 'tippety tappety' chain could just mean new chain and guides but
I'll assume its been owned/neglected/trashed by a teenager unless I see evidence to the contrary.

Bit mixed.

If I were looking for a no-surprises bargain, I'd be after a pushrod CG-copy engined bike.

Brace yourself for the deluge of people telling you to buy something Japanese instead, or to save your money for the DAS.

This will then be followed by a lengthy debate on Indian/Chinese production quality. Then to round off a smart arse will pipe up and 'remind' us all the YBR is Chinese.
Very Happy

As for your question: It's probably better to get something that doesn't need any work. If it's got things wrong with it then who knows what else has been neglected. Unless you can get it very very cheap.

Is it? I hadn't heard. Whistle

For build quality, I would rather have a Chinese made bike than an Indian one. CBF 125, Duke 125... Enfield. Sloppy buggers.

Are Enfield that bad? I only know one person who puts real mileage on one and other than a self inflicted issue early on in ownership he has had no problems despite abusing it throughout winter. (It's actually made me really want one).

Quality is patchy, and they keep (or kept) fiddling with the designs for no good reason. I like my AVL, but there are obvious bodges and daft designs on it. Sprag clutch and not-a-decompressor spring to mind.

The new UCE engines are much better designed, but there are still common complaints, like hydraulically adjusting tappets that don't.

IMO the new price is based on the badge, not the quality, same as the Duke and to a lesser extend the CBF.

To be clear, I went in eyes open and very much enjoy riding mine and at £2K with all the right mods and extras I have no buyer's regrets. But I'd be reluctant to spend £4700 for the 2015 equivalent.

I'm a bit thick though, and the dealer is just across the road. Whistle

I'm sure you can get something reasonable and without issues for not a lot of cash if you are buying chinese. Yes, I know Kymco is Taiwanese but it's still chinese enough without the parts support that the chinese enjoy.

I just wouldn't buy if there are issues.

Well we got it for £50 on the assumption the engine's fubar
as the rest of the bike is in very good nick.
Pics soon.
I'm currently stripping it down and if the engine is beyond economical repair, will probably shoehorn a CG type lump in.
I've always had old bikes and resurrected and mixed and matched manys an old thing, so fixing up a simple bike like this is easy work compared some of the previous challenges.

Mirrors, seat, tank and a lot of the plastic parts removed and stowed safely.
Engines out, heads off and can't see any catastrophic damage
(so far)
Will remove valves and check them soon to see which one got a clout.

At this point my theory is, the cam chain wasnt tensioned well,
slipped and threw the valve timing out
I can't see any obvious visible damage to the piston or valves though.
The bore looks perfect with no scratching or gouging from debris

I've got a bad feeling about this.
Its all to easy, it came apart so easily and quickly
nothing seized or rusted, rounded off nuts
the only stuck one was the CS screw holding the tacho cable in
I'm not used to easy jobs.
taking pitchers as I go, will post when I pack it in for the day
I know you cant wait.

Now look, I know you chaps like a good laugh and all that but
please no more unkind comments about my shitty old bikes and chinese crap OK?
You know it upsets me and me mum says if you make cry
and I start wetting the bed again she won't let me on here anymore.
thanks

I know a dealer that's been around for aeons and switched from Peugeot (and another more mainstream franchise that I can't remember) to Kymco a couple of years back; he thinks they're great, better than what he was selling before and he didn't need to tell me that, he knew I was trade and he wasn't going to be selling me one.

Just for balance.
