Hi,
I ordered a flat sheet of air filter element to cut to size on the filter frame in the air box - it's cone shaped and easy to do.
My foam element sheet is grey foam one side with a thin denser more fibrous material on the other side.

Question is; does it matter which side faces in or out once I've made it into a cone; i.e; denser side in towards carbs, etc?

Cheers lads,

It may not matter but I think I'd go coarse filtration outer,
finer filtration inner ( carb side) as a general rule.

I mean in reality it isn't going to make much of a difference but the finer stuff is more likely to clog so put that facing inwards.

Agreed, Course outer.

Reason being, the more open cell structure catches larger pieces first, then the more dense material catches the smaller bits. If it was the other way around it would be more likely to block up quicker as the foam would be absorbing everything in the same place.

Thanks for this. Cheers.

Do you think the oiling of the element is now unnecessary as a result of this thicker skin on the inside?

Always oil foam filters, helps trap smaller particles than the foam alone and means you can wash the foam and the oil carries any particles out of the foam.

This has just reminded me to wash-dry-oil my spare filter.
Looks like a wrecked fly cemetery.
