Hi all,

Recently my front brake became really squeaky when braking so I decided to check if they were worn or something, I couldn't see the indicator groove so I took of the whole thing to have a look and that's what it looks like.
I can't find any groove in there so my guess is they need changing asap but on the other hand it looks like the pads are still quite thick so I don't really know what to think of that.
Any suggestions?

Loads of life. As for the squeaking noise, its probably because the caliper needs a clean esp the pistons and slide pins need regreasing. Otherwise looks good to me

Hi

Not all pads have indicator grooves. Unless I am missing something in that pic the pads look almost unworn.

Give everything a good clean up and put a bit of copper grease on the BACK of the pads (ie, between the pads and the caliper piston).

All the best

Keith

Just clean it and put all back. Brakes make noises from time to time.

thanks for the replies, I just wanted to double check Thumbs Up I thought all brake pads had indicators though.
I'll have a look at regreasing the pistons etc.. I guess all the recent riding in the wet and salt didn't help Confused

Try a smear of copper grease on the back of the pads. Thumbs Up

Just don't overdo it with the copper grease, thin film where the metal backing pads touch the caliper. Not gobs of it. I found ferodo organic pads really noisy. Brembos kind of make a whooshing noise unless my caliper is really shocking, then they squeal a little.
And clean the solidified black dust before you throw more grease at it all. And copper grease or high temp brake greas only or you will die a horrible death.

The reason for squeaking brakes often is because of dust worn off the pad material. It's worth wiping the discs with a piece of kitchen roll or clean cloth wetted with methylated spirit as this leaves no residue. Your pads incidentally look almost new.

Or brake cleaner if you're posh or in a rush. Convenient aerosol can. About £3 from small automotive suppliers. I get away with keeping some under the sink at the girlfriend's, in my mother's garage, and have trained my car driving friend to keep some under the guise of occasionally fixing the brakes on his cars or various bits of studio equipment.

Note that some transfer of pad material to disk may be required for optimal brake performance and most brakes self clean in optimal conditions. Salty and grease mess with this.
