PostPosted: 13:30 - 07 Feb 2015    Post subject: Speedfigher 2 100cc bad starting for my charity bike ride :) Reply with quote

First things first, I bought a real cheap 2008 speedfigher 2 100cc moped as me and a few friends are doing a charity bike trip from landsend to John o'groats on mopeds that cost no more than £200 in September for cancer research. For abit of fun and to raise money for a great charity that so many people have been effected by.
Ok I've picked up a speedfigher 2 100cc and I've got a few issues. When I bought the moped it was running. I got it home tried to start it the next day and no joy, I got a new battery, spark plug and cleaned the carb out. And the only way I can get it started is if I use abit of carb cleaner to get it started by spraying it in the carb. The immobilisers works good as light goes out. I've not got a manual to check carb setting etc for adjustment. What tests can I do on the auto chock? Can I just power up the auto choke and see if it moves to check that it works? I've got fuel and spark but it just won't start without carb cleaner being sprayed into to the carb. Also many wiring issue that ive also fixed from previous bodged repairs lol. I'm a car mechanic by trade but very realy work on bikes. Any help would be great. Cheers

Break it up a bit Shocked

Sounds like not enough fuel in the carb...have you tried running it from a seperate gravity fed tank?

Sorry mate thanks for the reply. I've not tried that yet but the vaccume fuel tap seems to be working as I've tested it and seems to be all ok.

It's not too clear but I'm assuming the bike will run once it's had it's carb cleaner dose?
Does it not start either when it's hot or cold?
How does it react to throttle once it's running?
Is the plug looking as though it's suffering from a lean mixture?
When you cleaned the carb what exactly did that entail? Did you just spray carb cleaner in there or strip it totally? If the latter was there any significant amount of cleaning required?
What state was the carb mounting gasket in? you haven't overtightened it have you (If I recall these are hard mounted to the engine and have a nasty plastic gasket, correct?)

yeah the bike runs and revs good once started and it makes no difference if its hot or cold it just wont fire up inless it has it's carb dose....

the plug looked good neither lean or rich.

i removed carb, all jets, and float, it was not dirty to be honest but used an air line and carb cleaner to clean through all jets etc, and made sure it all went back as i found it.

the carb on my speedfight is not hard mounted with a gasket its different to the 50cc that are hard mounted.

thanks for the reply

Yeah it was sat up for about a month so I was told but ive also removed all the fuel and cleaned the vacuum fuel switch and the fuel pipes are good. put fresh fuel in the tank.

What the best way to test the auto choke? Can I just remove and then put a 12v feed to it to see it it moves?

Also has anyone got the factory settings for the carb?

So. You bought a shitter, and discovered that it's shit. You then elect to name-drop a charity on a forum that's historically been notably hostile to charity touts.

This thread will not go in the direction you want it to.

Tried popping the air filter off, completely covering the carb opening with your hand and see if it starts up?, I had this problem with an old street fighter I had years back and ended up installing a bodged manual choke.

How will bodging a choke help with this? A choke covers in intake in the same way that the throttle does.

What this will do is show that the air filter is either blocked of missing. Sticking your hand over the intake will limit the air getting in.

For a 'car mechanic by trade' I'd have thought a wee single cylinder bike would have been a peice of piss as the fundemental principals are the same.
Squirting anything down the inlet instead of proper fault finding
is bad practise. tut tut!
I'd allow it as a get you home/garage measure but that's all
