Has anyone used PJ1 Fast Black engine & case paint?

I want to repaint the outer crankcases of my XL125.

A few questions:-
Not sure how many coats are required, will one can be enough to do two smallish crankcases?

The parts I want to paint will have to go back to bare metal, there are already a couple of layers of "repair" paint on there. After a bit of googling, there seems to be no concensus on whether a primer is needed or not, have you done this, did you prime or not and what were the results like?

I'd get it powder coated, if you just want them black and they can lump it in with other stuff they'll probably do it for ~£20. They'll blast it and you'll get a better finish.

I've used plastikote BBQ paint straight onto bare metal to good effect. Takes a while to fully set properly though.

I could have them powder coated, but I'm not after a concours finish, cheap n cheerful will do. Just a thought, would powder coating affect engine cooling?

Wouldn't had thought so people do it all the time, plus it's an XL125, hardly a machine that would be affected by a few degrees.

Personally I think ~£20 for you to drop it off as is and a get better finish (not just looking but lasting) is much preferable to £13 for a tin of rattle paint, then time spent cleaning it up and actually painting it not to mention the chance is goes tits up because you ain't used lacqueror because the weather is shit for spraying atm.

I wouldn't go the powder coat way either. It'll play havoc with your gasket seals of the crankcase covers on both sides - be them wet or dry!

I've had very good results with Halfrauds Engine Satin Black.

Build the coats up slowly (four to six with a gentle rub down between) allowing a good hour at room temperature between.

Cool, is a primer required, if I'm going down to bare metal?

No, but give it a key with a scratch of some green 3M scourer.

Wash it down with degreaser - if you have - if not, a wipe with some petrol to make sure you're spraying onto a clean surface.

Don't go for a wet coat, just lay the paint down gradually; coat by coat.

This time of year? use a fan heater - anything - to heat the bits you're going to paint.

Go for it and good luck.

Post pics on how you get on.

Yes, a number of times.

Should be but wont be very thick.I'd do three on a cover like to get rubbed.

It's so 'thin' it will leave any sanding marks in the alloy... you may want to add a layer or too dependng how polished t is by the time its cleaned up.

No Prime. But multi coats.ANd 'trick' BAKE'EM. Especially 'cool' parts like cases. Running, they wont get hot enough to self cure like finning will.
Where I have't been able to fit a whole engine in the oven... I've used a decorators paint stripper heat gun.
Results? Fair to Reasonable. To my eyes its a fair aproximation of a 'factory' black finish; not over shiney, while not the black-board-paint matt of BBQ black or old 'pot-blacking'.

You get them to mask the gasket faces obviously...

It's crap.

Avoid.

I have to buy two sets of paints in now, PJ1 for the punters because they like the brand name thus sells well & Tecote for the workshop because they won't use the PJ1 because it's horrible to work with.
