Is there anywhere that I can ride a bike larger than a 125 without having a bike licence to see if buying a sports bike is for me?
I drive a company car most of the time, but I have a Impreza WRX as a toy, but it spends most of its time sitting in my garage because it's an expensive toy and I'm starting to think a bike might be just as fun but cheaper.
My issue is that I rode a moped a long time ago when I was at college and I came to the conclusion that it was a death trap, granted it was a very old rev and go Honda melody and not a nice big sports bike, but at every opportunity it slid out from underneath me.
An example is, if I rode over one of those tiny little dropped curbs, the type most people have outside their house driveway and I didn't hit it straight on, if I hit it at an angle, the bike just ended up sliding, kind of like someone had just kicked both wheels from under me.
This happened a good few times on grids or little curbs or in the winter on a patch of ice and I really can't afford to pay for a direct access, a bike, gear, tax and insurance only to find out that a bike isn't for me.
I'd really appreciate any help or advice.
Thanks in advance.

Well, you'll need to find someone with a bike who's willing to trust you with it.
Training school is the obvious choice.
The "Get On" scheme is aimed at new riders on peds and 125s...

... but there's no particular reason why you can't have a go on a bigger bike. You'll need to ask around the local training schools though.
Failing that, you can do a CBT course, or at least the road ride part of it, on a bigger bike. Again, it's unusual, but you don't ask, you don't get.
Last resort, you may have to do a CBT course first on a 125 and then blag or pay for a go on a big bike.
You're unlikely to find a training school with sports bikes, but any 600cc+ 'A' bike is going to give you a reasonable impression of whether you're OK with the weight and into the revvy stuff. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

I can't find on on the website but I seem to remember when I did this many years ago that you did not need a licence.
Best to phone them and ask to be sure. Think you just need to know how to ride a geared motorcycle. |
