As the title says.

Is there much point in purchasing the bike lock/chain on sale in Aldi this week?

From a deterrent point of view, obviously the more visible security measures taken the better as far as the opportunist scumbag is concerned, but for the ones who want your bike for more than just a rag around the field then torch it, nothing is really going to help is it?

My lad is looking for his CBF125 (parked outside the pub where he works most of the time), so I thought this might help with the tanked up twots who see bike and think free playground toy.

I suppose any chain is better than no chain at all. But I wouldn't rely a cheap chain.

It would be ok to use for a lock in a safe location like outside a cafe.

Probably better than a disk lock because your less likely to try and ride off forgetting to undo the lock.

Lots of disc locks come with those reminder strings that you attach to the bars. But chaining to something solid definitely makes sense. I'd buy one at £9 and use it while saving up for something better?

Visual deterrent only, but that's what you want. Alarmed disc / padlock might do the job as well or better.

Root problem is working with pissheads though. Sad

As said, it's possibly better than nothing but, considering that the Oxford chains are renowned to be made of cheese and are a fair bit more expensive, it may be a waste of £9 but, I suppose it may be worth a punt if he can't afford a more expensive one at the moment.

EDIT:
Just read some reviews on this site. https://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/psa-aldi-motorbike-lock

Overall, it doesn't seem too bad for the money. The lock can be a bit dodgy apparently, so might be worth getting another one to go with the chain.

Cheers guys

Pretty much what I thought.

Enough to deter the petty and pissheads, as he is 17, training and a bit strapped for cash at the mo, I thought an idea to keep his little pride and joy his and safe enough for now.

If we were in a bike crime hotspot, I'd suggest something better, but as said, visual deterrent should suffice for the time being

If you're parked next to another bike that doesn't have a chain, your £9 chain is probably going to make the difference. Unless they really, really want yours in particular, then it wouldn't matter what chain you had.

Exactly - Thats why I'm not hugely bothered with buying an almax or the equivalent.

If we are talking professional thieves with a van, they will get your bike whatever you do.

I could drive up to someones bike, get out my portable angle grinder and be through any chain in seconds and the only people who would take any notice wuld be the owner or a copper. General public are just not interested in getting involved.

They're referring to a completely different lock and chain.

Last years was a 10mm chain, pretty heavy, with a decent lock. I bought 2 of them.

This years is far lighter, thinner links (probably around 8mm), with an integrated lock.

For the money, it seems alright, its more portable and probably good as a deterrent if you're popping away for 10 mins... But I wouldn't count on it for long term security.

I wonder how easy it would be to knock the plastic coating and lock off.

13mm long link lifting chain is available on ebay for about £7 a metre. Combine that with a padlock, and you have a chain that can provide a significant hurdle to most theives

For a visual deterrent to pissheads, you may find a cheap bike rain cover more effective. Lidl/Aldi (can't remember which) do one which ain't bad, mine's lasted over a year - beating my previous R&G one!

The stuff that me and Rogerborg (last time he posted about it) use is 16mm long link anchor chain.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/16-mm-x-102mm-Long-Link-GALVANISED-ANCHOR-CHAIN-LIFTING-BOAT-YACHT-/110955299364?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item19d5738224

Doubt that the links are specially hardened in whatever fancy stuff motorbike chains are. But it is HEAVY and looks pretty meaty, so as far as a visual deterrent goes.. must be pretty high up their. Bear in mind that the 16mm almax stuff is more like £100

I also bought some black material for 70p a metre to make a sheath around it, so it looks a bit more professional and presentable, doesn't scratch my paintwork, and dulls the sound when (you're hitting people round the head) moving it around. Don't want it sounding like a boat has dropped anchor when you put it down.[/i]

I find the 16mm a little to heavy to carry around, so I only use it in the garage. The 13mm is nearly half the weight.

Motherfu... I was just going to link to exactly that chain. Very Happy

£18 delivered for 2m, then add any meaty looking padlock you like. Nobody's going to pick it.

It's even RED FOR DANGER.

The cheapest CEN4 rated padlock that I could find on ebay was the Yale maximum 63mm lock, at £19 delivered. I use this lock with the red chain above on the msx, along with a pathetic, yet sold secure rated, disk lock, to meet retarded insurance requirements
