Y U No buy Haynes manual yet?
I remember reading an article that tested various air filters comparing them to stock. Short answer is aftermarket ones flow slightly better but allow more dust through. Can't go wrong with an OE filter as it was designed for the engine.

You could watch my rather dodgy video on how to do this job.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnDPwJxfN00
Apologies in advanced, it's not the best video.
Eitherway, to answer your questions:-
Yes, tank needs to come off completely.
Tank hinges needs to be removed.
Remove side panels for access.
Remove awkward rubber cover over air filter.
Unscrew top off air box.
Swap filter.
Reverse the above.
Put a K&N in mine. Didn't notice much, but then I just pootle along in London. ____________________ Beginner Biker Adventures Blog

Probably just used to the power by now - They're not fast bikes, nippy (yet overweight) commuters at best. Around 85hp at the wheel iirc. Best I got out of mine was 147mph on the clocks (135 GPS) and it took a mile to get there.
You should be able to swap the filter with the tank pivotted up, but removing the fuel tank isn't a problem anyway - Turn the tap off and remove the fuel hose. Bit of rag to catch any excess in the hose.
FZS600's seem to be one of the few machines where K&N filters actually have a reasonably good reputation. Sadly, mine gave me a vicious flat spot at 5k, so I'd recommend an OE replacement. Much cheaper as well. I think you'd need to be doing 50,000+ miles for the K&N to pay for itself.
You do get a nice induction growl from the K&N though. ____________________ Skyjet SJ125-26 (Dead) || Yamaha FZS600 (Dead) || Kawasaki ZX-9R C2

You will struggle to get the filter out without removing the tank
The rubber cover over the air filter is held by the bolts that hold the tank hinge
You also need to remove both side panels slip the rubber bit of the fram pegs and it will come out but not easily
I like EIX plugs but they make most difference at low revs
So not much help with peek power
While the tank is off check the fuel filter in the pipe between the tap and fuel pump ____________________ Dave
