I have recently acquired a bandit 600 1996 but the problem the old owner was having was that every few weeks the bike would stop working because the plugs were fouled but after a clean it would run again. Anyway I spoke to him and he says he checked the plugs but there was a weak spark on all 4 but he also says he has changed the chi unit and checked the coils but I have spoken to two mechanics and neither have a clue does anyone have any experience?

Assuming carbs, is the choke stuck on or is he riding with it on?

Nope he never rode with the choke on but I have been told it could be using too much fuel and not burning enough because of the weak spark sounds plausible to me

When you say the plugs are fouled, are they sooty black or oily?

Try doing a compression test, and check the spark plug gaps.

I would clean up all the earths on the coils, trim back the HT leads and change the air filter.
If that doesn't work I would check for a badly fitted Dyno-Jet kit.
Also does it have the standard can on it?

Have you checked for rotten/dirty contacts in the multi-plug both the coils and the ignition unit side?

Try Halfords electrical contacts cleaner on both then try with spark plug tester

I am gonna check tomorrow all of these things and it has an ART end can on it and the carbs have already been balanced by the Suzuki dealer over here in Guernsey but I will definitely try and test everything

Was the fueling corrected for the end can?

Just spoken to the mechanic who says it is a carb issue and that they have done a compression test and nothing is wrong and he said they have checked the spark plug gaps and other bits like the earths on the frame where it has been painted and ruled out the ignition system he reckons it is a poorly fitted jet kit or a problem with one of the actual carbs so does anyone know if gsxr 600 carbs will fit?

Short answer, no, get the carbs set up properly I very much doubt they need replacing.

Stupid question, have you changed the plugs rather than cleaned them?

My Bandit fouled the plugs, refused to start. Clean plugs it'd run for a bit then foul up again. Bought new plugs, fired up and ran perfectly for the entire time I owned the bike.

Carbs have lots of adjustments inside and to all intents and purposes do not wear out. I doubt they need replacing.

Check they are clean and set them up properly. If you have the standard parts put the standard air filter and exhaust on then set the carbs to factory spec and go from there.

I don't think this is the issue but it's naive to claim carbs don't wear out. Needles and emulsion tubes wear out as do slides with elevated mileage.

I know, I didn't want to confuse the OP. My point carbs aren't a part of the bike where buying a second hand set and lobbing them is a decent solution, barring damage obviously. Every part in the carb you can replace easily and cheaply enough.
