I'm using some pretty budget (£80) Nitro helmet, which lets in a lot of wind noise and has pretty poor ventilation.
Longer journeys i use ear plugs, which i would probably do regardless with a new helmet but i was wondering which brands/models are particularly good at blocking noise.

I have a Shoei GT Air that is fairly quiet however part of the visor mechanism sticks out and causes wind noise, I'm going to try using some Sugru to make it more aero dynamic. Thumbs Up

Not all Schuberths are quiet.
The discontinued R1 is pretty quiet but the S1 isn't.

I have a Schuberth C3. It's not terrifically quiet for my use cases, but it depends on where your head is in the turbulent air flow. It's a lot quieter on a naked bike, but still not something you'd want to do a long motorway trip on without earplugs. A lot depends on how well it seals around your head, too. There's a chin curtain that velcros onto the chin area, so it's adjustable for fit. A lot of noise for me, though, is created by a gap at the back of my head. Putting a hand back there, or a neck tube, reduces noise. But a neck tube impedes neck mobility, interfering with the jacket collar. The whole system has to work with your gear, seating position, air flow, etc.

But the question was which helmets known for being quiet. That would be many Schuberth helmets.

Son uses windjammer does make a big difference and well made but at the expense of air flow stopping your visor misting up.

When I have used it found misting an issue and your head is a a lot warmer, in wintercgreat, in summer not so good.

If wind noise is your main concern though I would recommend it, cheap enough to try as well.

Can you buy extra large ones or do you just stretch them?

I had one of them and they helped but 3 problems:

1. It pulls on your face when putting the helmet on and taking it off.

2. Misting

3. On a warm day you will sweat loads due to little airflow

Have a read of some reviews on WebBikeWorld if they have the helmets you like. They generally try to suggest and rate how noisy helmets are..

I think some Shoei's are known to be pretty good. The quest?

My XR1100 is certainly okay, however anything above 50 you'll want ear plugs anyway.

I wear ear plugs all the time now, I don't know how I used to do it without them!

Thumbs Up

I find the GT Air quiet, on a motorway for a long while you'd still want ear plugs, but you don't get a massive ear bashing like you may with other helmets.

Shark Speed R

It's vastly better than my HJC FG15 which in turn totally eclipsed my IS16 which whislted horribly

As I understand it the Speed R is designed for unfaired and upright riding positions, so it won't work for everyone and I suspect it is a fair degree of marmite as well.

The visor doesn't ratchet. At all. There's a weak but adjustable friction mechanism, but its mostly just to keep the visor open when putting the lid on. Slam it shut and a small fina grabs onto a stud on the helmet and it won't open again without a fight. I can pop it open one handed in su!met gloves, but in winter gloves it is staying shut. Later versions have a maxvision pinlock.

The chin vent is clunky and sends gale up the inside of the visor, reasonably quietly though. Vortex generators on the leading edge of the vent may be the reason it does not whistle. Top vent hisses a bit but lets in loads of air. Quiet when closed.

I still use earplugs if I'm going to be sat at motorway speeds for an extended period but as I am a musician and spend more time at a Yamaha mixer than on my bike, I'm pretty paranoid aboiut my hearing.

I have one of these on my Shark S700 and whilst it was not a deafening whoosh without it, the Jammer had reduced the noise a fair bit.

Then again, I tend to ride with music on the Bluetooth, so all it means is that instead of being on 8 volume I only need it turned up to 7 (numbers used for example purposes only)

Schuberths king, especially in the pro model.

But gay white flip.

Go Scorpion, the airfit shuts out noise.

The Shark Speed is is my main lid, i use my wifes HJC RPHA as my other lid and I find that way quieter at speed.
I also prefer lifesavers in the HJC as well, truth be known they are two different sized, the Shark is a
Large and the HJC is a medium, perhaps there's a shell size difference?
