 |
|
Hi everybody, I'm new here. And new to biking, been riding my 125 learner bike for a few weeks. I'm coming here with the dumbest question ever, so here we go:
What is the proper procedure for stopping?
Yeah, I know, hit the brakes. I know the official textbook safety statements:
1. 75% front brake, 25% rear brake, unless it's raining in which 50-50
2. Don't brake on a turn
3. Don't lock the wheels
Here are my problems with these:
1. How on earth can you measure percentages? It's anyone's guess. Silly question I know, but what I mean is, why not just slam both brakes? If the intent is to use the front brake "more", that still doesn't make sense because how do you compare your hand force to your foot force?
2. No braking while turning... But what do you do when you need to brake on a turn? Say you're going around a bend and someone steps into the road? Or you're going around a roundabout and the light turns red?
3. How can you possibly know if you're going to lock the wheels or not? Once you lock the front wheel you go flying, right? But how do you know it's about to lock? It's like blindfolding someone at the top of a cliff and saying don't walk over the edge.. Perfectly sound advice but how do you know where the edge is?
My motivation for asking this is that I fell off my bike yesterday when stopping at a red light because my front wheel skidded. I don't know how to prevent this from happening again! |

The chances are the reason you fell off is because you grabbed the brakes. The method for braking should have been explained in detail on your CBT. If it was not then allow me to go into instructor mode and what we tell the students. (of course made shorter and simpler)
| Quote: | The book tells us that on a dry day you want to be using 75% front, 20% rear. I do not know how to work that out in my head, I just know I can use more front than rear. On a wet day I want to even those percentages out. 50,50. Snow and ice, leave the bike at home.
Now, to use these levers you have to be progressive and not aggressive. Liken them to a dog. If you are rough with the dog, it'll bite you, gentle with the dog and you will get a much better response. The same applies to these brake levers. Grab them hard and the bike will bite you.
To stop safely we employ a 5 point braking plan and it goes as follows.
1. We roll off the throttle. By virtue of doing that we utilise the engine braking, Also our hand is heading towards our front brake, which is point 2.
2. We gently apply the front brake. We can squeeze but it has to be a gentle squeeze. If you are gentle you can squeeze the shit out of it.
3. Apply a little back brake to aid with the slowing down process.
4. A little bit more, or less (normally less) to come to almost stop.
5. Just before you stop, select first and foot down. |
But also as Recman said. Anticipation. If you see the lights are red, roll off the throttle early enough. Use slow control to coast to the lights and hopefully you do not need to be forceful on the brakes, or even stop. ____________________ illuminateTHEmind wrote: I am just more evolved than most of you guys... this allows me to pick of things quickly which would have normally taken the common man years to master

We have probably all been there with the new bike, tanking into the ever decreasing bend then grabbing all the brakes with the inevitable result that the bike sits up throwing you off through someone's fence (if you're lucky )
Were you too heavy on the brakes or were the conditions not suitable for a quick stop. That's where experience kicks in as there are many dangers out there well capable of dumping you in the gutter and you'll either learn to spot them or you'll learn by falling off.
Wet roads, wet leaves on road, muddy roads, white lines, drains, manholes, potholes, diesel, road surface removed, newly resurfaced roads, rain, snow, ice, black ice (you won't even know)
Just slow down gradually until you get the feel of the bike and it's brakes in all conditions. There's no point in fleeing up to a potential red light. |

Non facetiously, remove the need for it. Lights turn red, and this shouldn't have taken you by surprise. With experience, you'll learn the point at which you should commit to riding through rather than outbraking yourself trying to stop.
You've also learned how hard you can (or rather can't) pull on the brake, so that's progress too.
There's no magic short cut, just give yourself more time and space. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Simple - you carefully test the path ahead, a step at a time, until you have Learned what is safe and what is not.
A wise man doesn't test the water with both feet, etc.
Like all aspects of riding, you need to practice, and learn how the bike behaves on different road surfaces, under different conditions.
When you practice braking, try stopping from different speeds using the front brake only, the back brake only, and different combinations of both. Do it on different surfaces, in different weather conditions. Eventually, you will get a 'feel' for how the bike behaves and what your safe stopping distance is at different speeds, and how to balance the bike to keep it upright.
Observation is part of braking, so make sure you know what's behind you as you approach traffic lights (or anywhere else where you need to change speed) and slow down earlier if necessary.
Remember what your L plates are for - you'll get there! ____________________ Honda Varadero XL125(V8)

This. I have no idea how much braking I can apply on my current bike before the wheels lock up. If I'm ever forced to slam the anchors on in anger, I'm sure I'll find out. In the meantime, I prefer to ride in such a way that I can anticipate most of what other road users are about to do.
Under normal riding conditions, there shouldn't ever be a need to slam the anchors on to the point of locking the wheels. Even if some dippy twat pulls out in front of me, I should be riding in such a way that either I have no time to react at all, in which case braking doesn't really enter into it, or I've anticipated them and should at least be able to hit them in a smooth, controlled manner. And yes, if they pulled out in front of me and I can't stop upright in the distance I have, I'll hit them rather than drop the bike, because at least that way I have a fighting chance of their insurance covering the damage. ____________________ Current Bikes: 1983 Honda VF400FD / 2003 Honda VT750 Shadow
