Having rode one on holiday I realised how much fun they are and how cheap and practical they are.
I'm looking to get one for the short journey to work and for popping into town which is about 4 miles away.
I always associated them with chavs and saw no reason to have a bike under 600cc Smile but now I've seen the light.
Can someone help me choose a decent one.
Think the Yamaha majesty and Honda pcx seem popular.I like the Piaggio liberty too.
I don't want to pay more than about £2200. Long service intervals would be good as would engines with a decent lifespan.
Not that bothered about speed but would like one that doesn't go into crawl mode when it sees a hill.
Thought I'd ask here as maybe new riders are more likely to have had one recently or still own one.

Well i'd buy used but the PCX seems to be a nice scooter. If you aren't into hooning about like a chav then I think it should last well and give good service.

On speed I see one on the motorway regularly when I'm on my 125. it's about the same speed it seems to max out at about 70.

I've thought about a cheaper older one but for the miles i'll be doing also having a bigger bike I thought for a few hundred more I can buy new or low mileage and have trouble free riding.
They seem to be more reliable now though. 5k used to be a lot for a scooter but I've seen them with 20k on now.
Only thing I'm not keen on with the pcx is the footplate isn't flat.I like the vespa style ones more.
I think the new majesty is a bit too much really, although I do like it.

Any chance that was a holiday romance?

Practical, cheap, yes. Fun? I'd have to try a 125 but that's pretty much the last word I'd have used to describe my Burgman.

i used to ride a honda pcx, found it very comfortable and easy to ride, only issue was because of the small wheels any bump in the road was an annoyance. i would just recommend a 125 bike rather than a 125 scooter as its slightly more fun

Anybody ride 125s not only the new riders. They can be more fun than a big bike in town.

About which one it depends how tall you are? IMO PCX is made for midgets. Try Honda SH125 or PS125 much better scooters. Comfort is way better, have step through wide, flat floor board, big nice seat, big tyres.

For some reason "sport" 125 scooters are all the rage now - which is oxymoron. 125 is 125.

If you feel hippier can go Vespa 125 GTS Very Happy

Piaggio Typhoon 125 / Aprilia SR Motard 125/ sportcity 125 are excellent scooters too.

Yeah I know lots have scooters now but the big boys hang out in the other forum and scoff at anything that doesn't do 0-60 in 3.5 secs Smile
It was partly a holiday romance Roger but I realised how comfortable they are even on a 30 mile ride and for getting into town they seem ideal.Free parking too.
I did find them fun.Probably in the same way riding a monkey bike is fun.Just so easy to ride too.
As soon as I rode 200 yards down the road from the hire place I had a smile on my face. Can't fully explain why lol.
It appeals to me not changing gear all the time in town and being able to quickly wheel out a light bike when I need to do something.
I mostly use my bike for pleasure now.For short trips and work I use the car.
I just think I'd use a scooter more for everyday trips.Would probably use it more for work too as its going to be cheap to run and keep me a bit dryer than the naked bike I have.
Don't want it to replace the 600 but just fancy something else too.

As far as the Burgman goes I did consider one in the past but then its not really the light, nimble, cheap to run, easy to get in and out of the back garden, full throttle everywhere experience I'm looking for.
Probably the things that make the small scooters fun have been lost when they made that bike.
Its like buying a Grom and putting bigger wheels, big bore kits, better exhausts and shockers on.Just becomes a normal bike that still doesn't really go that quick.

You're probably right. I'm thinking of scootaying up again this winter (i.e. early September) and reckon I might as well just go for something like a PCX instead of a midi.

I second the vespa gts. As much as I used to dislike scooters, thats what were looking to get for my gf.

Its actually a decent machine, healthy full 15hp out of the engine, cvt tranny to squeeze the most out of it, and good storage space.

Would never replace my 600 but it is what it is.

I think vespas look cool, the neighbor has a pcx which I've ridden, would recommend, nippy and comfy, corners well and doesn't look half as chavy as the gileras and peugeots zipping past with the indicator still flashing Thumbs Up

What would be the reason to run a 125 alongside the big bike though? If its fuel savings then surely you need to be doing hefty mileage before you even brake even on the cost of 125 purchase/tax/maintenance.

Big bike for long distance and storage space for work as had to store jacket trousers helmet gloves and lunch on the bike as nowere inside to put it
Also can get all my fishing tackle on with ease

125 was for local stuff and always useful to have a spare
Used to go to the pub on way home from work leave bike there and still have one to use next day for work without having to get up early and walk to the pub to collect it

Will be getting another as I like a small light bike for winter
Looking at lml this time as I've also had small vespas and loved them

Had a gt200 and as good as it was it wasn't as much fun as the little ones

I think I prefer the flat footplate and maybe big wheeled style. Those two you mentioned Val seem to fit the bill.
The new majesty/pcx look really nicely specced but I think i'll look for something a bit less space age. Do I really need start stop and ipod docks lol.

They are obviously cheap to run but yeah its not saving you money if you have a bike anyway. But my 600 is in good nick,i like it a lot and want to keep it a long time. Its my weekend ride and I don't want to run it into the ground.
I do about 15k a year and having 2 bikes and a car is going to spread the wear and tear a bit.My car seems to be clocking up the miles fast this year as I've not used the bike as much as I normally do.

Thought about a 125 bike bigdom but couldn't wait to get rid of the last one.No pleasure at all for me.You still have gears and they aren't particularly light or nippy.Tyres last about 3k and they rust like a tin of beans.

As I said, first time I jumped on the scooter I was grinning.I had it for about 8 hours and never got bored of it Smile

Think I'm going for a Peugeot Tweet Smile
Its the style I'm after and £1700 new with 2 year warranty its a bargain innit.
Heard its actually Chinese made or something but it supposedly goes quite well and is light.
Just got to wait till I move now and get my garage but I'm cited Laughing
