Crank shaft bearings

Whats the best way of fitting the bearings without a puller or any 'special' tool?

I used a socket on the outer race

Bearings in the freezer to make them shrink slightly, crankcase in the oven to make it expand slightly. Drop the bearing in square so it goes in first time then tap it home with a big socket or piece of tube that bears against the outer race.

If what you're trying to do is put a main roller bearing in a crank case (it's hard to tell) then I have tried the bearing-in-the-freezer, heatgun-on-the-case trick and it didn't go very well. The bearing went about half in and then got stuck solidly.

I took it to a local engineering firm and the guy just whacked it in the rest of the way with a leather hammer, I felt pretty silly!

I've put the crank and bearings in the freezer going to leave them there for 24 hours, I'm going to try heat the casing up either in the oven or blow torch. Very Happy

I don't see the point in buying a crankshaft installer tool when I'll only be using it once. I won't be doing this all the time, it's been a pain in the arse up to now.
