So, I have a large and very round head. My actual round measurement is about 61 CM!! (definitely not inches) but so far I've only been able to tolerate 2xl helmets.

I spent today in a large motorcycle store trying to find anything that would fit... and there's pretty much bugger all. From what I've read all the helmet brands have been moving towards narrower and narrower shapes, and I'm at a loss as to what to do.

I can't try all the different helmets, because each one needs to be ordered into the shop beforehand, and it seems 2xl is... well rather large, and not kept in stock that often.

Are there any sub £200 helmets that would fit me? The closest I've got so far is a HJC IS-Max 2 in 2xl. But that still hurts my cheekbones, the foam may adjust to my head... but I'm wary of pissing away £150 on something that doesn't actually get any more comfortable.

Any suggestions? I'm in London by the way, and if there's a shop stocking the suggested helmets, all the better, I can actually try it on.

Thanks!

Edit: FYI, a flip up is preferred, although the fit is the most important thing.

Tried an x-lite? They're the only thing I can get to fit me comfortably, I've tried most of the other major brands at shows and shops with no luck.

Any particular model you recommend? Also, any idea where I might be able to try one on?

I've had two now and both have been decent lids, so I wouldn't recommend a particular model so much as the brand in general. I should point out that I wouldn't consider my head to be particularly round, only that I also struggle to find a brand that suits my head and close xlite happen to.

I think I got my first from Hein Gerieke back in 2008/9 and my second a year or so ago at the Birmingham bike show. I'd suggest just googling for a supplier.

Thanks for the link Marlin, but the majority of those helmets have been discontinued, or their successor has had the head shape made into a narrower shape... It's tragic really. Sad

Thumbs Up

Same size head near enough and double crowned and the only lids that fitted were Shoei.

Agree with this. Big head here too. I ended up getting a Scorpion Exo somethingorother in XXL and it's OK but it's still pretty tight. Tried on a few other cheaper XXL's and some I couldn't even get on. I tried on a normal XL Shoe few weeks ago and it's a lovely fit.

Anyway, my point is different makes XXL's are different sizes, try more on or up the budget. Don't give up, it's frustrating but you'll get something.

Also, most online shops offer no questions asked returns so could be worth ordering a few online and sending those that don't fit back.

I have a friend who has the same issue. He was turned away from his booked CBT as they didn't have a helmet that fitted him, even 2XL wouldn't go past his ears.

We went quadbiking last weekend, same issue - managed to squeeze a 2XL offroad type lid with a big chin gap down to his cheeks, but it looked awkward.

He has kind of given up hope Laughing

My equally comfortable and slightly cheaper Shoei Raid II is also an XL if you don't fancy the Qwest. Thumbs Up

I think I'm just going to bite the bullet and buy a Shoei Neotec. Glad for 0% finance!

Seems like I'm going to have to be that all the gear no idea guy for the sake of comfort.

Welcome to the club. I also have big round head. Sightly smaller then yours 59cm and wear XL helmet. I also was thinking flip one will be better. Actually when you close it what matters is the fit, means good fit full face is better than bad fit flip one.

This one is heavy 1.6 kg not my definition of comfort. I have read it is very quite - it does not matter if you have ear plugs as you should.Maybe I am missing something.

Flip ones are heavier too. Unless you are police or courier and have a good reason I do not see the point of the flip one for normal rider.

So far the best fit for me has been cheap MT helmets. Their are Spanish one of the biggest helmet manufacturer in the world. Although relatively cheap the quality and insulation are actually much better then many expensive brands.

I have 5 stars Revenge £80 and 4 stars Thunder £40 both are excellent fit for me.

https://www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/motorcycle_parts/content_cat/1294

Not sure where in London you can find them.

Helmet city have them:

https://www.helmetcity.co.uk/pages.php?pageid=3

I also have Caberg - it has its advantages like smaller outer shell and better visibility angle and observations, but the insulation is tiny compared to MT and it is tight on my skull on the sides.

Have tried Shoei, Shark, Scorpion, AGV - so far not good feeling.

62cm here, and no problems. HJC make nice lids, while they're neither quiet nor light, they do fit well. Earplugs + manly neck muscles are the way forwards.

Tried on ALL the helmets today in the shop. Got a much better feel for them.

Went for the Neotec in the end. It's heavy, but it fits well. It was a toss up between the Qwest and the Neotec, but for me the weight is worth it. I live in London, and I want to get into touring, it's just going to be really helpful to have full access to my face when I need it (not to mention easy access CPR if shit hit the fan). But it's a preference ultimately.

For reference, the 2xl HJC IS-MAX 2 was tighter on my head than xl Neotec and xl Schuberth C3 Pro. It really does pay to try on everything you can.

Yeah, everything comes out. Fairly handy. Tee XR1100 looks darn good too, I'd definitely consider that if I wanted a full face.

Some helmets are available with different cheek foam sizes if it's fitting around your jaw that is the problem.

Each manufacturer will favour a different headshape, often different models form a manufacturer having a different shape. A good helmet fitter will know the shape of the range.

Look at this: https://www.webbikeworld.com/motorcycle-helmets/motorcycle-helmet-shapes.htm
